Los Angeles rapper and producer Rockitneedspace has officially released his collaborative project Next Day Air. with New York City producer collective SURF GANG, out now via Tan Cressida Records.

The nine-track project brings together Rockitneedspace’s distinctive rap cadence and left-field energy with SURF GANG’s boundary-pushing production, moving through plugg, hip-hop, and electronic influences. The project was recorded at Tan Cressida’s studio in Los Angeles and executive produced by Earl Sweatshirt and SURF GANG.

Next Day Air. includes the previously released singles “Mr. Doubt,” featuring Cletus Strap and Earl Sweatshirt, and “factory reset.”, which arrived alongside a video directed by Aida Osman, known for The Hawk, Rap Sh!t, and Random Acts of Flyness. Additional features across the project include Anklesandwich, Leota, and distroROE.

At the core of Next Day Air. is Rockitneedspace’s connection to California weed culture. Drawing from his own experiences and relationship with the scene and industry, the rapper builds the project around themes of supply, demand, package distribution, and the everyday language surrounding deliveries. However, the concept extends beyond the lifestyle itself, with Rockitneedspace using wordplay and storytelling that can connect with listeners regardless of their relationship to the culture.

That idea also carries into the album artwork, designed by Harrison of SURF GANG and Rockitneedspace, with photography by stoopidcute.

Much of the production comes from Harrison, following his recent solo album Taking a walk & calling a car home and his extensive production work on POMPEII // UTILITY, the acclaimed collaboration from MIKE and Earl Sweatshirt. SURF GANG members evilgiane and Flea Diamonds also contribute to the project.

Sonically, Next Day Air. builds around what Earl Sweatshirt has described as “West Coast plugg.” Rockitneedspace has encouraged SURF GANG to combine the hazy and melodic qualities of plugg with the attitude and energy of classic West Coast rap. The result also draws from the influence of ’90s gangster rap alongside warped textures and melodies reminiscent of old-school video game soundtracks.

The project was mixed by Earl Sweatshirt and marks Rockitneedspace’s first release on Tan Cressida Records following his signing to the label. With a team now supporting his creative process, Rockitneedspace has been able to step away from some of the engineering and production work he previously handled himself, allowing him to put more focus into rapping, writing, and visual art.

The cinematic world surrounding Next Day Air. draws heavily from ’90s and early-2000s movies, particularly Friday and the film Next Day Air., which shares its release date with Rockitneedspace’s birthday. That influence can be heard in the project’s sequencing, with “ZOUTHBAYLAKERZ” designed as an end-credits moment that gives the listener a chance to sit with the experience before starting something new.

Ultimately, Next Day Air. is built for repeat listens. Rockitneedspace aims for the project to leave listeners with the same feeling as finishing a great smoke session: relaxed, satisfied, and ready to run it back.

The release will also be celebrated at Puffco’s Puffcon LA on October 3 and 4, where Rockitneedspace and Tan Cressida Records will host a Next Day Air.-themed booth featuring an exclusive collaboration and a limited run of 100 jars.

Rockitneedspace will also support Cletus Strap at his debut headline Los Angeles show on November 28 at The Echo.

With Next Day Air. now available, Rockitneedspace is carving out a distinctive space between West Coast rap, plugg, and electronic experimentation while embracing the creative freedom that comes with his new home at Tan Cressida Records.
