Hailing from San Francisco via New York City, indie rock artist lucky break returns with her latest single “Head Down,” arriving alongside a visually striking new video. The release sets the stage for her debut album made it!, due May 8 via Fire Records. Fresh off a performance at SXSW, lucky break is also preparing to hit the road this spring and summer, including select dates with Maisy Owen.

On the surface, “Head Down” glows with shimmering guitars and layered, double-tracked vocals, but beneath its dreamy exterior lies a darker thematic core. The track explores the illusion of innocence and the quiet complicity that allows people to look the other way, driven by the pull of instant gratification. Opening with the striking line, “Mass produce destruction, get out of bed,” the song immediately establishes its emotional tension—balancing beauty with unease.

The accompanying video, directed by Margaret Elle, was shot in Los Angeles and visually mirrors that contrast. Speaking on the concept, Elle explains, “Walking around and riding public transit in Los Angeles feeling like a fallen angel—I think a lot of young women can relate. A lot of the music video visuals for lucky break come about from us walking around with a camera and hoping something turns out and it just always does. When working with lucky break, I so strongly feel this telepathic connection because our crazy abstract visions align so easily.”

The forthcoming album made it! was born out of a deeply personal chapter in lucky break’s life. Written during a period marked by first love, heartbreak, illness, and isolation after moving abroad to teach English, the project captures a raw emotional spectrum across eleven tracks. Reflecting on the record, lucky break shares, “made it! captures my life from 19 to 23 as I was going through major transitions, finding my inner compass and figuring out how to live in alignment with my values.”

Produced by Jessica Thompson alongside co-producer Elliott Woodbridge, the album draws from a wide palette of influences. From pop and country roots to 90s alternative icons like Pavement and Liz Phair, as well as songwriting greats Lucinda Williams, John Prine, and Joni Mitchell, lucky break crafts a sound that feels both nostalgic and distinctly her own.

Beyond the music, lucky break extends her artistic vision through hand-drawn illustrations that shape her album and tour visuals, including a limited-edition zine and sticker pack. Her multidimensional creativity has already caught the attention of Melissa Auf der Maur of Hole, an early supporter of her work.

With made it! set for release on May 8 via Fire Records, lucky break is stepping into a defining moment—introducing a debut that captures the turbulence, beauty, and self-discovery of early adulthood, while marking her as a compelling new voice in indie rock.
