After teasing fans with a mysterious hotline announcement delivered by mail last week, DIIV have officially revealed their fifth studio album, ZIRP!, arriving October 30 via Fantasy Recordings. Alongside the announcement, the New York band has shared “The Fountain,” an expansive new single that signals a brighter, bolder chapter in the group’s ongoing evolution.
Built around the idea of “The New Alternative,” ZIRP! finds Zachary Cole Smith, Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield, and Ben Newman embracing the tension that has defined DIIV throughout their career: the abrasive textures of underground guitar music meeting the immediacy of pop songwriting.
Rather than choosing between the two worlds, ZIRP! brings them together. The album arrives as DIIV increasingly reject the genre boundaries that have followed them since their earliest releases, pushing shoegaze, grunge, alternative rock, and pop instincts into a sound that feels simultaneously familiar and difficult to categorize.
That refusal to settle has long been central to DIIV’s identity. Their 2019 album Deceiver leaned heavily into grunge and heavier guitar textures, while 2024’s Frog In Boiling Water explored the harsher, more atmospheric side of shoegaze. With ZIRP!, the band turns toward melody without abandoning the density and distortion that made their music so distinctive.
The result is what the band calls The New Alternative — a musical space suited to an era where traditional genre divisions increasingly feel outdated. Artists such as Slayyyter, Eartheater, and Turnstile have similarly blurred the lines between scenes and sounds, helping create an environment where underground aesthetics and pop ambition can coexist without contradiction.
Produced by British pop innovator A. G. Cook, known for his work with Caroline Polachek and Charli XCX, ZIRP! takes its title from “zero interest rate policies,” a reference to the economic environment that helped fuel the era of failed startups, financial speculation, and the transformation of people into increasingly data-driven “users.”
Those ideas provide the backdrop for an album that expands upon the themes of Frog In Boiling Water while approaching them with a new sense of lightness. Social breakdown, Palantir, technology, and the endless cycle of streaming culture become material for a collection of vibrant, sharply written songs rather than purely bleak observations.
Lead single “The Fountain” offers an immediate glimpse into that shift. The track carries the sprawling guitars and atmospheric intensity associated with classic DIIV, but introduces a driving rhythmic guitar passage with the potential to translate to much larger stages. At its center is a more direct songwriting approach, with memorable hooks and melodies pushing further toward the foreground.
The album’s transformation began when A. G. Cook initially joined the project with the idea of radically reconstructing DIIV’s demos. But the producer quickly realized that a remix-heavy approach wasn’t the right fit.
“When DIIV initially approached Cook, the producer says, “it was in the spirit of destroying & rebuilding their demos, Screamadelica-style, into a finished product, but that hybrid, half-remix approach felt completely wrong to me.”
Instead, Cook immersed himself in the band’s live identity, attending performances and studying what made their sound work in a physical setting. That process led him toward a more organic production philosophy centered on live performance.
“I became a bit obsessed with their live sound, and insisted on recording live drums before most of the songs were even finished,” Cook explains. “We spent a lot of time recording intricate guitar parts with specific guitar pedals, and as little time as possible doing anything on a computer, at least by my standards.”
The approach ultimately helped define ZIRP! as both a creative reset and an extension of the band’s established identity. For Cook, the album became “a sort of utopian, dystopian mantra” and a vehicle for pushing DIIV into unfamiliar territory without stripping away what made the group compelling in the first place.
For DIIV, that means embracing a more immediate form of songwriting without sacrificing the textural depth that has defined their catalog. ZIRP! doesn’t represent a departure from their past so much as the point where their seemingly opposing instincts finally converge.
The band will bring that evolution to the stage throughout the coming months. DIIV are scheduled to perform at Balaclava Fest in Brazil on September 27 before supporting Interpol on select North American dates in October. The band will also perform with Basement at Shrine Expo Hall on October 20.
With ZIRP! arriving October 30 via Fantasy Recordings, “The Fountain” introduces a version of DIIV that sounds more confident in its contradictions — louder, brighter, more melodic, and increasingly unconcerned with where the boundaries between underground music and mainstream ambition are supposed to exist.
