2SOON Takes Some Time Before Deadbeats Arizona | Interview

by Eric Valencia

Coming off a successful Decadence debut, 2SOON took time to answer a few questions for us in anticipation of his upcoming Deadbeats Arizona appearance. We wanted to know more about this up-and-coming local artist that had some of the nastiest drops from that night.

Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself and what led you to become a deejay?

I have always wanted to do something in music ever since I was a kid. One day I was going down the YouTube rabbit hole and came across someone djing. I thought to myself “that’s pretty cool, I think I can do that” and downloaded VirtualDJ that night. I have now been djing for about 10 years. I started in the hip-hop scene but eventually made the switch to EDM when I went to Foam Wonderland in 2014. I began hosting my own events in 2015 and started making connections in the local scene and a name for myself. I eventually started producing in 2016 but didn’t hit it full force till 2018. Now we are here!

I read that you have gone through a few rebrandings before becoming 2SOON. What led to the various name changes and how did you decide on 2SOON?

When I first started djing, I went by DJ Robby Robb. I only picked that because it was my first name and wasn’t thinking long-term or from a branding standpoint. Eventually, I started producing and felt I needed to find a name that would fit my sound and that’s when I came up with Kromatik. Unfortunately, I didn’t do my research and someone else already had that name and was a lot more established within the dubstep community, so I had to change it again. For the longest time, I couldn’t find anything that would fit my sound, or the names I did like were already taken. In trying to think of a new name, I asked some close friends to describe me in a few words and a lot of them would say I was funny or sarcastic, so I thought “maybe a pun could work.” That’s when I thought of 2SOON and the rest is history.

What would you say makes your sound unique and separates you from other DJs?

Ever since I was little, I have been a music fiend. I would always listen to everything from hip-hop to rock to classical music. I was also in choir for 6 years, so I learned how to read and write music young. That helped shape how I now create and gave me the ability to curate a scene with my tracks and mixes.

What artists have had the greatest influence on you and why?

Some of my biggest influences have been Seven Lions, Sullivan King, and Kill The Noise. With Seven Lions, the way he creates a powerful story with each track helps me in my writing process.  Kill The Noise’s work ethic and how meticulous he is with every single detail in his tracks is something I try to implement as well. And as for Sullivan King, his overall stage presence and ability to give fans such an amazing show is what I hope to do equally well every time I hit the stage.

As the festival season moves into full swing, what are you most excited about?

Honestly, one of the things I’m most excited about is hearing all these artists I look up to and getting inspiration from what they are doing, as I try to grow with my production. Also, just experiencing the music as a whole because at the end of the day I love the music and the culture.

What exciting news can we share with your fans about upcoming releases, projects, or tour stops?

I have a few BIG label releases coming up that I can’t say just yet, but I am working on an EP that’s going to really solidify what 2SOON is. I have a few collabs in the works that I’m also excited about with some really good friends of mine.

Any final thoughts you would like to leave with our readers?

If you come to my set, be ready to cry and headbang at the same damn time because we are going on a journey!
