The sun shines on my soul while listening to Michal Menert and his newest EP “Fearless” fills me with warmth. During a time of heaviness for many, “Fearless” radiates vibrations of passion and soul that gleam throughout and will leave you feeling weightless. With wicked album art, a funky collab with Daily Bread, and a mystical ambient track, Michal Menert’s fiery creativity shines through.
The title track, “Fearless”, is an epic and complex opening to the EP. Full of twists and turns, the track begins with narration from an old sci-fi favorite, Outer Limits. The music crescendos as the narrator talks of human curiosity about the world and creation. “Fearless” is a confident track with a bouncy sample that encourages the listener to get up and dance.
Michal Menert and Daily Bread come together for “Too Blind”, a smooth track that shows influence from Menert’s early work on the Pretty Lights project. A deep bassline works its way through the song like a heartbeat and is joined by a winding synth. Michal Menert and Daily Bread go together like peanut butter and jelly with “Too Blind” spreading itself all over the senses in a delectable use of sound and composition.
“Keep On Living” brings good tidings of funky freshness and a message that runs deep. The words “The echoes of tomorrow are the cries of yesterday,” transition into an angelic voice that brings a feeling of hope and faith to the track. The soft and satisfying sounds of vinyl crackles lead into the next lyrically driven track, “The Way It Used to Be”. This song is full of powerful lines about the human condition and the world we exist in. Michal Menert’s use of drums and keys elevates the track beautifully and works in harmony to build up a message of past, present, and future.
Michal Menert commented that an unintentional theme came together on the “Fearless” EP through the samples of old religious records he had discovered while touring. In the track “More Shine” he uses a sample of what sounds like a choir which adds a layer of emotion to this tidal wave of a song. “More Shine” is a monumental track with a punching bass synth and is easily my favorite off the EP.
“Afterglow” is the final track on “Fearless” and it delivers almost seven minutes of ethereal soundscapes. A cool-down of sorts after an album of straight heat. This atmospheric track had me feeling meditative with its hypnotizing sounds and birdsongs. I suggest you close your eyes for this ambient journey of a song and let yourself float through time.
As “Fearless” comes to a close I reminisce on my first time seeing him live this past January after years of chasing a set. He spoke to the crowd and said “How many of you out there are dreamers? I’m a dreamer too.” A true dreamer and visionary he is with “Fearless” being a brave and beautiful display of talent and imaginative spirit.
