I-ZEN Teams Up With Hariharan for Darker Electronic Single “5AM”

Electronic music producer I-ZEN brings together Indian classical vocals and darker club production on “5AM,” his latest single featuring legendary Indian vocalist Hariharan. Released October 30, the track pairs heavy basslines, hypnotic rhythms, and chopped vocal samples with a voice recognized by generations of listeners. The collaboration takes a different direction from I-ZEN’s previous release, “LINEAR,” exploring a heavier sound influenced by techno, trance, and psytrance.

With a career spanning nearly five decades, Hariharan is one of India’s most respected vocalists. His work across ghazals, Indian classical music, film soundtracks, and fusion has established him as a familiar voice across multiple generations. Collaborations with A. R. Rahman and his role in the pioneering musical duo Colonial Cousins have further shaped his influence. He also performs the vocals on the widely viewed Hanuman Chalisa video, which has accumulated 5.8 billion views on YouTube.

On “5AM,” that recognizable voice enters an entirely different musical environment. Rather than placing the vocals within a traditional Indian arrangement, I-ZEN chops, manipulates, and weaves them through a driving electronic production. The result creates a contrast between the intricacy of Indian classical vocal expression and the intensity of contemporary dance music. Hariharan describes the production as clean and high-quality, noting how it brings Indian classical music and electronic dance music together in a way that could introduce younger, international audiences to the richness of the tradition.

The release follows “LINEAR,” which featured recordings by the late U. Srinivas, one of India’s most celebrated mandolin virtuosos. Where that collaboration leaned into melodic instrumentation, “5AM” takes a more forceful, club-focused approach. Together, the two singles demonstrate the range of influences shaping I-ZEN‘s work, from electronic pioneers such as The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and Moby to Goa trance, Infected Mushroom, and Paul van Dyk.

Growing up surrounded by Indian music while developing an interest in electronic production, I-ZEN has spent years exploring ways to bring those influences into the same creative space. His approach isn’t simply about adapting traditional Indian sounds for the dance floor. Instead, he takes familiar musical elements and reworks them within electronic structures, allowing them to take on new forms.

The collaboration also carries a personal connection: Hariharan is I-ZEN‘s father. That relationship gave the producer an opportunity to work with a vocalist whose music has been part of his life since childhood, while approaching the recording from his own creative perspective.

“Working with my father (Hariharan) on 5AM felt like a natural choice. I’ve grown up listening to him perform Indian classical music, including intricate sargam in ragas like Miya ki Todi. He has always been innovative, and the idea was never to force two genres together, but to bring his vocal expression into an electronic dance music structure to create something new,” I-ZEN explains.

“5AM” is the latest preview of I-ZEN‘s forthcoming album, FALSE AWAKE. The project features collaborations with established Indian musicians and vocalists, set against electronic production influenced by trance, techno, and psytrance. Rather than committing to one particular style, the album moves between melodic arrangements and heavier, more experimental material, reflecting the diverse sounds that have shaped the producer’s musical interests.

Beyond the production itself, FALSE AWAKE carries a broader creative goal: introducing younger listeners, particularly those outside India, to artists and musical traditions they may not have encountered before. Indian music extends far beyond Bollywood, with a deep history and a wide range of vocal and instrumental traditions. Through collaborations like “5AM,” I-ZEN is finding new ways to bring those influences into contemporary electronic music and share them with a wider audience.

With “5AM,” I-ZEN offers another look at the musical direction of FALSE AWAKE, placing one of India’s most recognizable voices in a darker electronic setting. It’s a collaboration that connects generations and musical backgrounds while giving Indian classical vocals a new context within the global dance music landscape.
