HARLEY GIRL Turns A Forgotten Vocal Into Playful New Single “I Know The DJ”

Australian producer HARLEY GIRL returns with “I Know The DJ,” a punchy, self-aware electronic release born from an unexpected discovery buried in his own hard drive. Built around a standout vocal phrase from creative collaborator Callie Reiff, the track captures the spontaneity of the production process, transforming an unfinished idea into a playful cut with plenty of attitude.

The inspiration came during a digital deep dive through HARLEY GIRL’s collection of old projects and audio files. While revisiting a folder of vocals Callie Reiff had sent him roughly a year earlier, he came across the phrase “I know the DJ.” What started as a leftover element from an unfinished demo quickly became the foundation for an entirely new track.

Rather than forcing the vocal into an existing idea, HARLEY GIRL built the production around it, experimenting with cuts, grooves, and rhythms until the track’s character began to take shape. The process was driven by the energy of the vocal itself, giving the single a sound that feels spontaneous while maintaining a clear sense of direction.

Reflecting on how the track came together, HARLEY GIRL describes the discovery as the moment everything clicked.

“This one started with a bit of a digital crate dig through my own hard drive. I found a folder of vocals that a new creative friend Callie Reiff had sent over about a year ago for a half baked demo I hadn’t managed to finish. I flicked through and found the the phrase ‘I know the DJ’. I dropped the take in and played around with cuts and grooves etc. I think the most exciting part for me was just finding the vocal – I feel as if the whole track painted itself for me before i’d started making it. It had to be silly, self-aware and a little bit tough – and I feel it landed in that sweet spot.”

That balance between humor and punch gives “I Know The DJ” its identity. The track embraces the playful side of electronic music without losing its edge, allowing the vocal to guide the production rather than simply serving as another element in the mix.

For HARLEY GIRL, the release also highlights the value of revisiting old ideas with fresh ears. A vocal that had sat untouched for months became the catalyst for a new creative direction, proving that inspiration can emerge from material that might otherwise have remained forgotten.

With “I Know The DJ,” HARLEY GIRL delivers a track shaped by instinct, experimentation, and a willingness to follow an idea wherever it leads. Sometimes, the right phrase is all it takes to turn an unfinished demo into something worth bringing to the dancefloor.
