In 2023, GRiZ unexpectedly stepped in to fill Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s scheduled Bonnaroo performance after the band was forced to withdraw. Rather than simply replacing their set, the producer honored the group by unveiling an unreleased remix of one of their most cherished songs. What began as a one-time tribute quickly became a staple of GRiZ’s live performances, with fans repeatedly calling for an official release.
Earlier this month, the story came full circle when Rainbow Kitten Surprise frontwoman Ela Melo surprised Bonnaroo attendees by joining GRiZ onstage to perform the remix together, setting the stage for its long-awaited release.
Rather than completely reinventing the original, GRiZ approaches “It’s Called: Freefall” as a respectful reinterpretation. Ela Melo’s unmistakable vocals remain at the emotional core while GRiZ gradually layers in his signature blend of soulful funk, cinematic bass music, expansive sound design, live instrumentation, and euphoric drops.
