Twenty years after introducing the world to his distinctive take on house music, Claude VonStroke is revisiting the album that launched his career. Beware of the Bird (Deluxe Edition) celebrates the 2006 debut with a collection of remixes, a return to his earliest original productions, and a milestone the album never reached during its initial release: a full vinyl pressing.

Originally released in 2006, Beware of the Bird brought together Claude VonStroke’s earliest club singles, many of which were created in his bedroom before gaining traction in underground clubs and on radio. Tracks such as “Deep Throat,” “The Whistler,” and “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?” helped introduce listeners to his playful, unconventional, bass-heavy approach to house music, establishing a sound that would become a defining part of his career.

The album arrived on CD to strong reviews in both Europe and the United States, landing at a pivotal moment for electronic music. Beatport and other digital download platforms were opening their doors, helping transform how dance music reached listeners around the world. At the same time, Claude VonStroke was learning to navigate life as an international touring artist, playing influential clubs including Fabric, Watergate, and Space Ibiza. His developing record label, Dirtybird, would eventually grow into a globally recognized name in dance music.

Now, the anniversary edition arrives through Wrong Number Records, pairing the original album with remixes from Mike Kerrigan, DJ Sneak, Justin Martin, DJ Assault, Kevin Saunderson, Paul C, Mary Droppinz x Drezza, Patrick Chardronnet, and Alland Byallo. The expanded release revisits six tracks, including “Deep Throat,” “Beware of the Bird,” “The Whistler,” “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?,” “The 7 Deadly Strokes,” and “Chimps.” Each remix offers a fresh perspective on the material that helped establish Claude VonStroke as an artist, while the first-ever full vinyl pressing gives the original album a long-overdue physical release.

For Claude VonStroke, the anniversary is about more than looking back. It is an opportunity to complete a chapter of his career that remained unfinished for two decades.

“In early 2005, a friend of mine from Detroit called to tell me Richie Hawtin was playing my first house track, ‘Deep Throat,’ at shows,” Claude VonStroke recalled. He explained that the track had been made in his bedroom using bootleg software and a $100 MIDI keyboard, making the news especially surprising. Having one of Detroit’s most prominent electronic music figures support the record gave him an early indication that something was happening with his music.

The momentum continued when Circoloco contacted him through MySpace about playing at DC10 in Ibiza. Although he admits the performance did not go as planned, the invitation marked the beginning of his DJ career. His early schedule soon included appearances at T Bar with Damian Lazarus, along with underground parties in Spain, Italy, and Leeds, including Back to Basics.

At the time, he said, there was little market in the United States for his sound. That began to change when he assembled his early singles into Beware of the Bird. The album attracted interest from an Los Angeles record executive who reportedly attempted to sign it on a napkin at a bar. Claude VonStroke declined the offer, retaining ownership of his masters and publishing.

Individual tracks continued to build momentum. “The Whistler” became a major success in the United Kingdom, receiving support on BBC Radio 1 and appearing in a national T-Mobile advertising campaign. Regular bookings followed at Fabric, We Love Space, and Bugged Out. Then “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?”, originally released as a B-side, helped push his career further forward.

The track’s title has prompted speculation over the years, but its inspiration was personal and straightforward. After moving from the eastern suburbs into downtown Detroit, Claude VonStroke noticed that people he knew in the suburbs were frightened of the city center. The track was his way of questioning that perception and celebrating the place he had chosen to call home.

By around 2006, his music was reaching an unusually broad range of DJs, from Ricardo Villalobos to Erol Alkan. Despite the growing success of the singles, however, the complete Beware of the Bird album never received a vinyl release.

Two decades later, that is finally changing. With the original masters still under his ownership, Claude VonStroke is bringing the full album to vinyl through Wrong Number Records, alongside the anniversary remix collection.

He also took the opportunity to recognize photographer Shauna Regan, who captured his early press photos and the original album-cover imagery in 2005. Her work helped define the visual identity of that early period, and Claude VonStroke dedicated a special thank-you to her memory.

With Beware of the Bird (Deluxe Edition), Claude VonStroke is celebrating the music that first introduced his sound to the world while giving the album a release format it never received the first time around. The anniversary offers longtime listeners a chance to revisit the records that shaped his beginnings and gives a new generation of dance music fans an opportunity to discover the foundation of his career.
