‘Flying By Candlelight’–The first in a new triptych of future club classics from the prolific trio
To whatever gods of dance there may be, please, oh please, let them play ‘Flying By Candlelight‘ at the Vancouver, BC stop of the Anjunabeats Tour! The first time I heard Flying By Candlelight, it was in the wee hours of the morning and I was dancing around my room in my PJs. I’d set an alarm, gone to bed early, and woke up before dawn to Paavo‘s voice saying “Live from Hong Kong, this is ABGT300!”
Even if I didn’t go to 300, there was no way I was going to miss experiencing Andrew Bayer, Above & Beyond, and ilan Bluestone’s live sets, so I woke my roomie Kate and we got the coffee brewing. We were pretty amped by the time A&B dropped ‘Flying By Candlelight’. That track had me up and dancing in my penguin jammies!
I instantly recognized the voice of Sunderland-born singer and songwriter Marty Longstaff as it was the first time I’d heard him since his voice graced Common Ground’s ‘Tightrope’. ‘Flying By Candlelight’ is lifted from the upcoming ‘Common Ground Companion EP’ (which also includes ‘There’s Only You’ featuring Zoë Johnston and ‘Distorted Truth’ – set for release on the band’s Anjunabeats imprint in March). If you’re an over the top Anjuna fan like me, you can watch the official lyric video for ‘Flying By Candlelight’ on Above & Beyond’s YouTube channel or stream both the Original Mix and Above & Beyond Club Mix on your favourite streaming platform.
Says Above & Beyond, “Flying By Candlelight is a love song about a saviour who rescues our protagonist from a dark, lonely place, taking him through a spectacular night sky. A bit like The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, but a bit longer lasting!” Listening to this soon to be a favorited Above & Beyond track amongst Anjunafamily, it’s a reminder of the songwriting chops that recently swept Above & Beyond to their second GRAMMY nomination for Common Ground album cut ‘Northern Soul’.
Marking the 500th catalogue release on Anjunabeats, those who like their music in a tactile format will be able to get their hands on 1 of 500 limited vinyl pressings of the ‘Common Ground Companion’ EP, available for pre-order on the Anjuna Music Store at 5pm GMT on January 23rd. Above & Beyond’s bruising instrumental ‘Distorted Truth’ will be released on February 8th, with Zoë Johnston’s haunting ‘There’s Only You’ completing the Companion EP release on March 29th. And speaking of Anjunabeats…
The Anjunabeats Family returns to North America in Spring 2019
When the Anjunabeats Tour was announced, my phone started blowing up!!! My Portland rave fam wanted to do another Anjunatrip and see Rufus Du Soul Friday April 26th and Anjunabeats Sat April 27th in Vancouver B.C. Considering that I was ghosted a week before my 2017 Vancouver B.C. Anjunabeats trip and I ended up going solo, I decided 2019 would be a redemption of sorts. Fingers crossed they play Flying By Candlelight!
Returning to the highways of the United States and Canada following a year of hosting festival stages including Electric Zoo and EDC Las Vegas, the Anjunabeats ten-date run showcases the labels eclectic talent pool in some of the continents premier venues. These will be Anjunabeats biggest shows to date. Having already bagged two GRAMMY nominations in 2019 (Best Dance Recording and Best Remixed Recording), the imprint founded by Above & Beyond is set for another landmark year.
I truly can’t help but be green with envy of my Cali friends! Lovers of proper trance and progressive in Los Angeles and San Francisco get to double down on Anjunabeats. The label hosts two special weekenders at The Hollywood Palladium, LA and The Midway, SF – both nights promising unique, all-star line-ups. Anjuna fans can hear what the label’s best and brightest have been cooking over the past year at the following venues:
