There’s no better place than Dirtybird Campout to experience the best and the full breadth of what the tech-house label has to offer – but the music isn’t what puts this boutique festival in a league all its own. What really sets it apart is the summer-camp design and spirit, from the competitive field games to the engaging and wacky activities, interactive shows and showcases of its own community. Whenever you aren’t getting down at a set, you’ll want to check out all these other fun things going on.
Campers get assigned to one of four teams and can sign up for a variety of tournaments like dodgeball, kickball, tug-o-war, a water balloon toss and the Iron Bird Olympics. There’s a bike race, potato sack race, a .5k floatie race and costume boat race. Kayaks, paddle boards and canoes can be taken out on the water of the massive reservoir at the venue. Archery, soccer, volleyball, ping pong and other pick-up games invite dirtybirdies to test their skills each day as well. Artists on the lineup participate as camp counselors and play alongside campers at the events, fanning the flames of camaraderie amongst teammates.
Papa Claude VonStroke serves as head counselor, competing in all the tournaments and stopping by virtually everything on the schedule. Tons of activities take place at the third stage, Claude’s Cabin, where attendees have opportunities a-plenty to get involved including open-mic stand-up, beatboxing, yoga, dance classes, a twerking workshop, dating show, spelling bee and talent show. Some of the most ridiculous and rambunctious moments of the weekend go down at Claude’s Cabin, especially at the craziest bingo you’ve ever seen, the Bad Drag Show, and the unhinged madness of Lap Dance For Your Life.
The Peacock Program presents 15 different creative acts and exhibits of applicants from the Dirtybird community as part of the Campout experience, including some returning favorites. The Vibeapple art car mesmerizes with 10,000 LEDs lining its pineapple shape, with a motion-reactive controller to change the LED patterns! The Giving Tree art car exudes magical life as a wondrous hangout spot with several stories to ascend. For the most exciting way to traverse the grounds, hop on the DBC Municipal Railway, a stylish San Francisco cable car outfitted for moving and grooving. Other acts include a pub quiz meets game show (BINGPOT! Trivia), a tunnel of LED balls at the festival entrance, the Temple of Fluff chill-out sanctuary, a fashion show, a self portrait studio and more.
Dirtybird Campout recently updated their health and safety protocols, requiring a lab-verified negative PCR or Rapid Covid-19 test from everyone taken within 72 hours of entering the festival, despite vaccination status. Make sure to plan ahead for this as some testing sites can take longer than 3 days for results to come back, and tests taken more than 72 hours before entering will not qualify.
