Carré is New on the Horizon and Delivering Anything but a Square Sound

by Tanya Valencia

Here at Fresh Music Freaks we are dedicated to bringing you the freshest of the fresh! I’m excited to share a new group that is going to be making waves in the music world. With origins in France, this new group, Carré, is ready to release their unique sound upon your ears. For those who are into a more aggressive and chaotic sound when it comes to their music preference, boy do I have something tasty for you! With their debut single, “This is not a band” Carré is prepared to lockdown fans early on in their career.

If you didn’t know, Carré means square in French, which is a theme used by the group in an entertaining while symbolic way. Carré is comprised of three French artists living in Los Angeles who are focused on producing a unique sound that is difficult to put into any specific genre. Each member of the group delivers a major piece of personality into the distinctive sound that I am dying to hear more of. Julien Boyé, who focuses on drums, percussion, and vocals, brings a sense of Organic sound to Carré. Also focusing on drums, and vocals, Jules de Gasperis adds in synths, production, and mixing talents into the group for an Electronic touch. Rounding out the trio is Keveen Baudouin who also shares in the same Electronic vibe as Jules but has a notably Psychedelic tone to his guitar expertise. Baudouin has pulled influence to develop his edgy approach to guitar from out of the box players like Nels Cline, Jonny Greenwood, and Marc Ribaut. Ahead of their single release, the group dropped a pair of teasers on their website to stir up some interest.

As you listen through “This is not a band” you can clearly hear the influence that comes from each member, building on one another to create a sound that captures you immediately and takes you on a ride. “The making of our band started with this whole idea of having two drummers perform together. It felt like a statement,” says Jules.  “We always wanted to keep people moving and tend to focus on the beats first when we write.” The trio took it a step further with their debut single by creating a visually stunning music video to go along with the song. In their visual experience, they carry over the same chaotic energy and it’s incredibly entrancing! Carré does a tremendous job of telling a story through their visual experience in a subtle way.

As someone who grew up thriving on aggressive rock music, Carré gave me a bit of a nostalgic vibe as I remembered some of my musical roots. Keep your eyes out later this Spring as they are brewing up an EP for release in May which will be Self-Titled as “CARRÉ” Their debut single “This is not a band” and video are available digitally now on all streaming platforms and on 7″ vinyl via Nomad Eel Records. I’ll leave you with this insightful quote from the group that truly encapsulates their approach to music.

“There’s something about not getting attached to the form, when you step back and disengage yourself from the form, you become in touch with something more pure and spiritual, while remaining in the square.” –Carré.
