William Black dives headfirst into emotional ruin with “Monster,” a cinematic melodic bass anthem featuring newly formed duo Baby Blue. Out August 15 via Lost In Dreams, the single marks the fourth reveal from his forthcoming studio album—a gripping duet that captures the unraveling of a toxic relationship from both sides.
“Monster” opens with stark piano chords and sweeping orchestral layers, crafting a somber stage for Baby Blue’s aching topline. Their performances unfold as a call-and-response, capturing the collapse of two perspectives bound by hurt. As the tension builds, the track erupts into a cathartic drop showered in shimmering synths and serrated bass, signaling the bitter realization that sometimes the real monster is looking back in the mirror.
Summing up the feelings behind the new single, William Black shares, “‘Monster’ is about the darkness we all carry inside. That voice in your head that can feel like your worst enemy. It’s a song about facing it, understanding it, and not letting it win.”
Adding insight into the creative process, Baby Blue explains, “For us, ‘Monster’ is an exploration of what it’s like to face your own demons. At the end of the day, the ‘demons’ we all fight—whether that be our trauma or our vices or our flaws—are still just facets of ourselves. The fact we were able to split those two selves into two different voices and highlight that conversation by making it a duet was a really cool creative experience.”
The release follows three standout singles: “Save Me,” “Waiting On This Day Forever,” and the Fairlane and Amidy-assisted “Nightmare.” The latter earned early support from Illenium and Adventure Club, while landing coverage across tastemaker outlets like Airwave Music, Fresh Music Freaks, and Music on the Rox, further cementing William Black’s reputation as one of melodic bass’s most emotionally resonant voices.
While Baby Blue may be a new name to many, the duo—comprised of Annika Wells and James Quick—bring an impressive track record. Between them, they have amassed over two billion collective streams through collaborations with BTS, Jonas Brothers, Baynk, Tinashe, and Illenium.
With his fourth album taking shape, William Black’s live schedule matches the momentum. He is currently supporting SLANDER’s new audiovisual ‘Voyager’ tour across North America, alongside major appearances with Illenium at Echostage, Gold Rush, and Dooms Night, plus headlining sets at Nova SD, The Republik, Boulder Theater, Aggie Theatre, and more.
“Monster” sees William Black continue to expand his sonic palette with cinematic depth and emotional precision, offering another glimpse into what promises to be his most revealing album yet.
