When a DJ opens her set by telling you she’s going to try and solve a Rubik’s cube while DJing, your first thought is “oh this gimmick.” Your brain has flashes of Aoki and cakes or the many DJs that tell you to “fucking jump” right before the drop. When you come back from your reminiscing daydream you start to listen and immediately realize you have made a mistake. The bassline coming from the speakers is no main stage regurgitation, its some weighty Drum ‘n’ Bass and you are already dancing. As you look around you realize that your basshead husband, along with your House bestie and even the self-proclaimed Techno chick are all dancing with you. This was one of my favorite moments from Friendship that was courtesy of none other than the incredible Flava D.
Being able to make people dance across genres is something Flava D is quite talented at. She has a style of music that is so beautifully diverse that it’s unlike any other. This style came about from the unique way she got to where she is today. Flava D didn’t start as a DJ, she began as a producer and not just any UK Grime one. In 2008, around the age of 17, she messaged Wiley (a Grime MC) multiple times on MySpace. The two then released several tracks together and her reputation grew.
Moving away from the heaviness of Grime, thanks to Butterz Records, she started to put out EP’s like “Hold On / Home” and “In the Dance”. She developed a UK Garage inspired Bassline sound that draws you in with its energy. Her first album “More Love” is full of bouncing melodies and steady bass lines that you can’t resist bobbing along to.
Ever evolving and refining her sound Flava D has started to delve into the world of Drum ‘n’ Bass. Recently signing with Hospital Records, she released her first EP “Mesmerise“. Its fitting transition drawing on her knowledge of heavy Grime Bass and Garage Breakbeats. This is her first track after signing with the iconic Hospital Records. Those who know, know that Hospital Records is considered to be the label that made Drum ‘n’ Bass a UK staple.
Currently, Flava D can be found touring the US. Whether you are a DnB lover or still trying to find your niche, if she is in your city you need to see her. If by chance you are bitten by the travel bug, get to Croatia. There, catch her curating a stage at the legendary Drum ‘n’ Bass festival, Outlook. By constantly working on and expanding her repertoire Flava D has found her place among amazing women in Electronic Dance Music.
