Few could deny the impact that The Black Madonna has had on the dance music world. The Black Madonna, otherwise known as Marea Stamper, demonstrates that you can achieve your dreams no matter what obstacles lie in your way and regardless of what stage you may be in your life. Her motto of “We Still Believe” resonates when you see her, and it helped her create her artist persona which has lead to a very successful career with bookings, sold-out international shows, remixes for many top artists, an appearance on GTA 5 Online, and even her own work on several labels along with her aptly named “We Still Believe” radio show. We believe in the Black Madonna, and that is why she is our Women Crush Wednesday.
Her sophisticated mix of House, Techno, Disco, and Drum and Bass shows her versatility and her role as a pioneer receiving many accolades… even being named DJ of the year. Her time behind the tables has not overshadowed her strong pull towards LBGTQI activism, making her an advocate for social justice issues, a respected mentor and humanitarian.
I first encountered her at Electric Zoo in 2017, where she was featured at the Elrow stage. It was immediately clear that Elrow was a perfect fit for her. In general, an Elrow show is not the easiest stage/event for an artist to stand out at because traditionally Elrow tends to showcase artists that are edgier in their music choices and mixes. When The Black Madonna started her set, you knew right away something special was about to happen. It was obvious how talented she was as a DJ, artistically making a statement with her music choices and vocal cues. What was even more apparent was how connected she was to the audience along with her positive and engaging message welcoming all.
The Black Madonna recently announced her 2019 U. S. tour dates and her first stop is in New York City at the Knockdown Center on Friday, September 13, 2019.
