Trance music is a genre that encompasses so many different sounds as it has so many unique sub genres. Tempo Giusto has honed his skills in the many sounds of Trance and has delivered us some of the most creative and interesting tracks to date!

At ASOT 950 in Utrecht, we had the opportunity to talk to Tuomas about where this creativity comes from, his double life as a dentist and DJ, the Trance music scene and so much more. Here’s what he had to say!

FMF: Hello, this is Nadine from Fresh Music Freaks. I’m sitting here with Tuomas AKA Tempo Giusto. He’s one of the hottest acts in trance right now. He has tracks on some of the biggest labels out there like Armada, Pure Trance, Kearnage and Outburst. Recently, he worked with Mr. ASOT himself, Armin van Buuren on ‘Mr. Navigator’. What was it like working with him on that track?

Tempo Giusto: Well, what can I say — you get a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the number one trance DJ in the world. When you were a kid, you grew up with Armin, right? You were listening to his music, so it was a fantastic opportunity. When they got in touch and told me ‘let’s turn this track into a collaborative tune’ it was awesome.

It was like a little bit of a childhood dream then you’d say.

Yeah, definitely. You have those few big Trance DJs you’ve always been listening to: Armin, Ferry Corsten. I never imagined that one day I would be working with one of those guys.

Yeah, absolutely. I’ve gotten to interview Armin and that was a dream of mine. You have some of the most interesting trance tracks out there. What fuels your creativity in the studio?

That’s a tough question. I would say life all around — happy stuff, sad stuff, love, friendship, good moments and also bad moments. Everything inspires you to do something. A beautiful, positive moment can make you do a great track in a different, beautiful way than a sad moment. But I think that’s the main thing; just life.

It’s true because life throws things at you and then you have fuel for your creativity. Trance obviously plays a huge part in your life. What does trance mean to you?

I’ve been listening to trance for over 20 years and one of the best things about trance is that you can mix a lot of different genres together. You can be experimental and you can come up with a lot of new stuff and you’re allowed to do that. You’re not limited to any genre. You can make really powerful, raw trance tracks or you can make really smooth, beautiful tracks. That’s the beauty of it. And perhaps the best thing is when you make a new track and you play it out to a crowd and you see how the crowd reacts and if it’s a positive reaction, it’s one of the best feelings in life.

Good old road testing, right?

Yes.

I’ll be honest, sometimes (as a fan) you hear a track — it’s fresh, brand new, you’ve never heard it and you get goosebumps immediately. That’s when you know you have a winner. Aside from producing music and DJing, you’re a doctor! How do you manage your time between these two things?

You really just need to have passion for both things. I have eight hours of dentistry every day and then I do music for the rest of the time. But obviously I want to hang out with friends too. So you just have to be very efficient. If I didn’t love making music, I would just drop it — but I do. So you just have to have fun and you have to find the time to do it.

We’re glad that you find time to make music because we love your music. Since we love your music so much and we know you’ve got some new stuff cooking in the kitchen. What’s coming up for us?

I just started an exclusive deal with Armada Music and I’m going to have fresh, new music released every two or three months at least. I played lots of exclusive tunes tonight, which are going to come out in the near future.

We’re going to have a lot of ‘ID – ID’ when we look at your tracklist.

It’s going to be full of that. There will be a few tracks that people know and then others like, ‘what the hell was that?’ I got a tip from several artists that at ASOT, I should play all IDs. Play new music because people love fresh music and it’s all about just bringing your own sound here. I tried to do the best I could with that.

As a fan, I’ve got to say that I love when the artists play brand new tracks because it gives me something to look forward to when it actually gets released. Play those IDs all night long. Now, where can we catch you performing coming up in these next few months?

Next I’m playing in Helsinki, Finland — my home country. After that, I’ll be playing in Zurich in April. In May, I’m back in Sweden at Monday Bar in Stockholm. In the summer, I can’t make any promises yet, but hopefully I’ll be in the USA making my debut!

Are there any last words you have to say to your fans?

I just want to thank everyone for giving their time to me and sending me feedback on my music, supporting it, listening to it and all that. The listeners and fans are the fuel that keeps my engine running. So, thank you to all my listeners.

Thank you, Tuomas — for sitting down with me today. This is Nadine signing out!
