Smalltown DJs, Big Vibes

by The Freaks - Staff

I will never forget the first time I saw Smalltown DJs. It was 2011 at an outdoor music festival in Kelowna called Center of Gravity. I was only sixteen at the time, so getting to attend a music festival was still a new adventure for me. By the time I hit the mainstage area, saw the shining lights and felt the pumping bass, I knew I was hooked. Though I had attended smaller bush raves in the past, being amidst the energy of a crowd that large and a sound system that loud had definitely had me shook. Now, I was no newbie to Electronic Music. As most youngin’s my age, we had been growing up with legends such as Nero, Rusko, Doctor P, and Skrillex. At that time, I definitely preferred the grimy sounds of Dubstep. But on that hot summer day in August, Smalltown DJs changed my life. That day was the day I found House music.

Pete Emes and Mike Grimes have been at the forefront of our Canadian community for quite some time. Residing in Calgary, Alberta, Emes and Grimes have spent the last decade doing some killer collabs, touring the world, along with creating one of the sickest clubs in Calgary, The HiFi Club. Their energetic tracks have appeared on labels such as Fool’s Gold, Sweat It Out!, Mad Decent. Appearing at festivals around the globe, these two call Shambhala Music Festival and Bass Coast Festival home. In fact, their Fractal Forest Funk Jam is always a Saturday tradition and Shamb where the vibes are quite literally unbeatable.

Though I am sad I can’t catch one of their vibey sets due to the cancellation of festival season this summer (we are all collectively feeling this heartbreak…), the Instagram Live interviews happening on their page have been a light in the darkness. “Small Talk” provides the space for artists and friends to catch up and check-in with how each other are doing. Artists such as Ardalan, Walker & Royce, SkiiTour, Destructo, The Funk Hunters, and Golf Clap have had some chats already. Make sure you follow Smalltown’s Instagram so you don’t miss out! Listen below for some bouncy House to keep your quarantine bumpin!
