Melodic dubstep mastermind Seven Lions recently released his new single By the Light of the Moon. An emotionally charged melodic dubstep anthem that proves why Seven Lions is one of the biggest names in the scene. Brought to life by the beautiful vocals of singer Kerli, the song brought me back to some of my favorite Seven Lions songs with the huge sweeping drops that make you feel like you’re flying.
The song starts with some quiet chime-like tones, setting the tone for Kerli’s quiet, haunting vocals in the first verse. She sets an emotional stage as she sings about not giving up, even if the earth were to shatter. The quiet tone continues until reaching the chorus, when the quiet, haunting vocal begins to build into low, belting notes. The music cuts out for a moment during the chorus to allow space for the vocals to hit before coming back in to build up for an epic drop.
The drop hits as Kerli belts out the words “We will shine by the light of the moon,” and Seven Lions hits us with a massive-sounding drop that teleports you to a snowcapped mountain bathed in moonlight. As the sweeping notes hit you, you can almost feel the cold and snow brushing against your cheeks back and forth as you take in the marvelous view. Whether you picture yourself standing there with someone you love, thinking about everything you’ve been through together, or alone, imagining the recent challenges that didn’t break you, the emotion hits.
The drop sticks around long enough for you to take in all of the complex sounds that Seven Lions has layered to make such a beautiful soundscape. The second drop seals the image of the snowcapped mountain with a hint of assertiveness, giving the listener some courage to hold onto when the song ends and the mountain disappears. The piano notes in the outro give the vibe of reflecting on your vacation in the snowy wilderness as you drive back to real life.
By the Light of the Moon is a classic-sounding Seven Lions track that creates a soundscape transporting the listener to some far-off, beautiful landscape for them to process their complex emotions before returning them to real life. The huge sounds sweep you off your feet and truly can make you feel like you are flying if you close your eyes and allow the sound to take you. This will be a song I can’t wait to hear live and see what visuals he chooses to go along with it at his upcoming show at Rawhide Event Center in Chandler, AZ, on October 18th.
