Sarah Smith Turns Anxiety And Desire Into Dark Pop On Point Of No Return

New York-based pop artist Sarah Smith is leaning into the messier side of desire with her latest single, “Point of No Return.” The dark electro-pop track combines pulsing production with emotionally charged songwriting, exploring anxiety, self-sabotage, intimacy, and the complicated desire to feel wanted while simultaneously pushing that security away.

At the heart of “Point of No Return” is a character caught between wanting to be chosen and instinctively resisting the very thing she wants. Smith opens each chorus with the declaration, “I’m your favorite girl,” before returning to the more uncertain question, “what do you want from me?” The contrast gives the song its emotional tension as she moves between confidence and doubt.

Smith takes that conflict even further by dividing herself between an “I” and a “she,” essentially watching herself create the situation she is desperately trying to escape. The result turns the song into a portrait of self-sabotage, where the person in distress is also the one holding the weapon.

“It’s a song for the anxious-avoidant girlies,” Smith shares. “I’m drawn to big, nostalgic pop that can make sadness and anxiety feel cinematic and beautiful. I grew up on the Tumblr and recession-pop eras, and I love that melodramatic world-building, where escapism and anxiety can coexist.”

That cinematic quality carries into the production, which Smith developed alongside producer Carlos Ruiz. After the pair built a solid demo, Smith’s twin brother and co-writer Jason Smith joined the process, helping refine the lyrics and push the melodies into even catchier territory.

“Point of No Return” follows Smith’s 2025 debut single, “No Hard Feelings,” marking another step in what is still an early chapter of her music career. Her relationship with performance, however, began long before she started writing original songs. Smith began dancing at four years old and eventually performed professionally on projects involving the Brooklyn Nets and Nickelodeon.

After college, Smith began writing her own music and eventually connected with Carlos Ruiz, whose encouragement helped her gain the confidence to experiment with her sound and develop her own artistic voice.

Her influences stretch across several eras of pop and electronic music. Smith draws inspiration from the maximalist pop of CHVRCHES, Robyn, Marina & The Diamonds, and Kylie Minogue, alongside the sounds of ’80s new wave and the Tumblr-era pop she grew up with.

Those influences come together in a style that feels deliberately oversized while remaining emotionally vulnerable. Smith’s music embraces big production and immediate hooks, but underneath that surface are stories about getting older, intimacy, self-sabotage, wanting to be seen, and the ways people shape their identities around others.

With “Point of No Return,” Smith continues carving out that space for herself, using dark electro-pop as a backdrop for the contradictions that come with wanting connection while being afraid of what happens when someone gets too close.
