A Modern Take on ‘Trainspotting’s’ Iconic Monologue
Inspired by the cult classic ‘Trainspotting’, “Choose Life” reimagines Irvine Welsh’s legendary monologue for the present day. Infused with pulsating rhythms, deep basslines, and evocative spoken word by Linska, the track transforms Welsh’s existential themes into a modern techno anthem.
After the success of their 2024 collaboration “Digital Dream”, Rebūke and Linska sought to create another thought-provoking piece. When Rebūke debuted a clip of “Choose Life” in Edinburgh, Scotland—the setting of ‘Trainspotting’—it quickly went viral on TikTok.
Rebūke on ‘Choose Life’: “This track is a futuristic take on ‘Trainspotting’ inspired by Irvine Welsh’s story. The idea was to craft a narrative around contemporary scenarios while keeping the dystopian meaning of the original lyrics. After the success of ‘Digital Dream,’ Ella (Linska) and I wanted to follow it up by reimagining the lyrics and creating something fresh and new.”
Linska adds: “‘Digital Dream’ blended dystopian vocals with escapist instrumentals, and we aimed to capture a similar vibe in ‘Choose Life’—dark yet motivating, with a familiar narrator’s voice. The ‘Trainspotting’ monologue feels even more relevant today, and by reinterpreting it, we created a track with an existential message and an empowering truth.”
Bringing ‘Trainspotting’ Into the AI Era
In Rebūke & Linska’s reimagined version, the track juxtaposes today’s hyper-connected, tech-driven reality with the raw, rebellious spirit of the original:
Original Monologue (Irvine Welsh, ‘Trainspotting’):
“Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family… Choose rotting away at the end of it all… Choose your future. Choose life… But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin’ else.”

Rebūke x Linska – “Choose Life” (Excerpt):
“Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking smart television. Choose wireless headphones, paper straws, prioritizing mental wellbeing and streaming subscriptions… Choose saving up all your money to travel the world just to have the weather fuck up all your plans… Choose an existential crisis after asking AI to do a task in ten seconds that would have taken you ten hours… Choose your future, choose life.”
Expanding the World of Era
As an artist who integrates visual storytelling with his music, Rebūke shares insight into the creative direction for “Choose Life”:
“The visual concept offers fans another look inside ‘The World of Era.’ Linska appears on towering LED walls, addressing the people of Era in a tongue-in-cheek manner—teasing themes of governmental control and societal influence.”
The Road to ‘The World of Era’
“Choose Life” follows Rebūke’s previous album single “Endless” with deadmau5 featuring Ed Graves, rounding out a monumental 2024 for the Irish producer (Reuben Keeney). Over the past year, he:

- Completed a major North American club tour
- Released high-profile singles & remixes, including “JUNO” (set to appear on ‘The World of Era’) and a remix of deadmau5’s classic “Not Exactly”
- Saw his 2018 breakthrough hit “Along Came Polly” return to the charts with a remix by Konstantin Sibold, ZAC, and CARMEE
