Australian producer PhaseOne returns with his long-awaited sophomore album TERRANOVA, a genre-blurring opus that pushes the boundaries of his signature metal-dubstep hybrid into deeper, more cinematic territory. Out now, TERRANOVA builds on the explosive success of his 2019 debut Transcendency, but with a more cohesive and thematic vision that explores destruction, rebirth, and the emotional spectrum in between.
“Writing my sophomore album has been a true endeavor, especially following the success of my debut,” shares PhaseOne. “It took over a year to complete, with personal challenges and creative hurdles along the way, but I’m incredibly proud of the result. It’s more melodic than I expected, but still unmistakably a PhaseOne record.”
From the opening title track, TERRANOVA sets a cinematic tone. Narrated by PhaseOne’s wife as Mother Nature, the intro reflects on humanity’s downfall and the Earth’s rebirth, establishing the emotional and symbolic undercurrent of the album. Far from a standard collection of bangers, each track is crafted as a distinct chapter in a cohesive sonic story.
“I didn’t want to make a collection of club bangers,” he says. “I wanted to tell a story and create something cohesive that flows from beginning to end.”
That story unfolds across 10 carefully curated tracks, each chosen for its impact rather than quantity. Lead single “SOS” (with Make Them Suffer) delivers brutal breakdowns and existential urgency, while “Pulse” (with Banks Arcade) channels industrial rage. “Divide”, featuring Micah Martin and progressive metal band Intervals, adds emotional weight with soaring choruses and guitar solos—one of several tracks that bring structured songwriting back into focus.
“Each track has structure—verses, choruses, solos—and incredible vocal toplines,” PhaseOne explains. “That’s something I feel has been missing in today’s dubstep scene. I wanted to bring that back, while still pushing forward.”
Other standout collaborations include the relentless DnB-laced “Reset” with Flowidus and MC Dread, the cinematic “RedSky” with alt-metal newcomers Future Static, and the haunting “Lullaby” with dark bass favorite HVDES. From the melancholic to the monstrous, TERRANOVA delivers an emotional range rare in the heavier corners of electronic music.
Visually, the album carries a clear arc. The SOS video opens with the “tree of life,” symbolizing new beginnings. Pulse shows its destruction. Divide presents the fallout—a dystopian wasteland. The final album artwork ties it all together with a vision of a post-human golden world, reborn and thriving.
Rooted in the Latin phrase for “new earth,” TERRANOVA is a bold evolution for PhaseOne, blending explosive production, heavy genre fusion, and a compelling narrative of collapse and renewal. More than an album—it’s a statement.
