Crafted over several years in a carefully curated studio that blends mid-century modern with 1970s opulence—think vintage TVs, palm trees, and tungsten glow—“The Essence” is the Berlin artist’s first album since 2018’s “Parts of Life.” Despite not initially planning a full-length project, Kalkbrenner found himself organically returning to the album format. “I had basically moved on from making albums, but then I realized how nice it is to have something with a larger sense of cohesion again,” he explains.
While the title “The Essence” may suggest minimalism, it speaks instead to purity of purpose. “It’s about the essential. This is an album I can truly stand behind,” he adds. “Sure, there may be more well-known hits on my other albums, but there were always two or three filler tracks. This one doesn’t have a single filler. Not even a filler moment!”
