Daisy Chain Recordings Launches with Debut Release ‘Hush’ by Player Dave and sumthin sumthin
Renowned San Diego-based independent event series and brand Daisy Chain announces the launch of its record label, Daisy Chain Recordings, with its inaugural release, ‘Hush’ – a collaboration between Daisy Chain creator Player Dave and fellow Southern California-born producer sumthin sumthin. Charlie Sahm, known as Player Dave, founded Daisy Chain Recordings as a haven for artists crafting tasteful productions in genres like UKG, house, breaks, and experimental dance music. With the event series already solidified as a staple in the underground, the label aims to foster a community of creators dedicated to showcasing thought-provoking and boundary-pushing electronic music that hasn’t previously been brought to the forefront of American dance music culture.
Releasing alongside the label launch on August 2nd, ‘Hush’ epitomizes the sound Daisy Chain Recordings seeks to spotlight. The track is an experimental masterpiece – blending emotive melodies with heavy-hitting breakbeat-infused percussion and chopped-up vocal samples. The result is an emotionally resonant groove that champions the collaborators’ unique production styles and synchronicity in the studio.
Label-head Player Dave shares his thoughts on the track, “At the intersection of emotive melodies and heavy-hitting drums, we find myself and long-term collaborator sumthin sumthin yet again. As the debut release for my record label Daisy Chain Recordings, it felt right to have the first tune be with a peer I’ve had as long as I’ve had my alias.”
Adds sumthin sumthin, “Player Dave always finds a way to create a sense of vulnerability when we collaborate. Instead of writing something sonically heavy, we focus on emotional heaviness. This track beautifully portrays the boundless creativity that emerges when our minds harmonize, allowing our unique approach to music to be fully displayed.”
Daisy Chain Recordings aims to build a vibrant community for artists pushing the boundaries of genres and sounds in electronic music. While creating such a community can be challenging for new labels, the collective benefits from an already-established strong network of supporters and influential artists eager to support this venture through their endeavors as a staple underground event series. With its new imprint, the brand seeks to amplify its impact on artists that don’t want to commit to any one “genre” and leave a lasting legacy in the global dance music scene.
The label founder continues, “I’ve never found a home for my music, not under a bigger artist who could put me on, or at a label that I fit into perfectly. So I decided to make my own ecosystem—a place for tasteful beats in garage, house, drum and bass, and halftime, any electronic music that provokes introspective thoughts while pushing the envelope of anything I’ve ever heard before. A lot of this music lives across the pond in the United Kingdom, and if it isn’t located there, it’s heavily influenced by it. I strive to bring a bigger awareness in the US to some of my favorite developing UK acts and hope to get remixes from some I’ve looked up to for a long time.”
Established in January 2022, Daisy Chain is an independent event series, brand, and new record label based in San Diego, CA, founded by touring artist Charlie Sahm, aka Player Dave. The organization specializes in intimate, experiential electronic music events, regardless of size. Focused on fostering a community passionate about tasteful dance music, Daisy Chain primarily curates shows at Wicked West, an 800-capacity venue they’ve developed over the past two years. Since their debut, they have hosted major global tastemakers such as Machinedrum, Jacques Greene, Nosaj Thing, Ivy Lab, Eprom, Hamdi, Justin Martin, Peekaboo, Of the Trees, and hosted a stage takeover at Same Same But Different Festival in 2022. They also manage larger events for up to 2,500+ people and frequently collaborate with other promoters to transform private properties into unique event spaces. The collective stays committed to partnering with local artisans at each of their shows – from their favorite tattoo artists, designers, and immersive art curators.
Player Dave, the solo project of Charles Sahm, channels deep emotion through “genreless” electronic music. His tracks span across tempos and genres, driven by innate originality and bold rhythms heavily influenced by European dance music. His multidimensional expressions of love and pain continually push the envelope and are paired with unique visual elements to complement his auditory journeys. Since his debut album release, ‘Where the Wind Blew Me’ in 2021, the San Diego producer has been actively performing at clubs and festivals alongside Nikki Nair, Lab Group, Sam Gellaitry, Potions, and others at stops such as Phonox in London, Elsewhere in New York, Lightning in a Bottle Festival, Mission Ballroom in Denver, The Ground in Miami, 1720 in Los Angeles, 1015 Folsom in San Francisco, and more.
From San Clemente, California, Conrad Woodul, known as sumthin sumthin, has rapidly risen in electronic music. Starting with makeshift drum sets at age four, he self-taught guitar and piano before moving to electronic production. His unique sound blends originality with boundary-pushing elements, earning acclaim from both underground and mainstream audiences for his distinctive fusion of lightness and darkness.
Now with Daisy Chain Recordings, the prolific new label provides a new home for underground music in the United States and beyond. The debut release from Player Dave and sumthin sumthin, ‘Hush,’ embodies this vision, beginning an exciting journey for the experimental music collective and showcasing its commitment to bringing European sounds to the forefront of American dance music.
