MxNxSTxR, the genre-defying side project of Ty Dolla $ign, teams up with electronic tastemaker DESTRUCTO for a bold new release: “What You Need,” featuring the unmatched talents of Thundercat and Channel Tres. Out now via All My Friends / Empire, the track is a funky, R&B-soaked journey into the heart of the dancefloor, rich with infectious grooves and West Coast finesse.

Serving as the highly anticipated follow-up to their 2022 collaboration “All Of Me,” “What You Need” is a seamless fusion of soulful falsetto, funky basslines, and dancefloor-ready rhythms. It’s a sonic meeting point for four of Los Angeles’ most innovative artists, each bringing their signature flair to a track made for shimmering lights and late-night vibes.

Thundercat delivers a sultry vocal performance paired with thick, pulsating bass lines reminiscent of his classic “Oh Sheit, It’s X” energy—proof he was built for dance records. Counterbalancing that fire is Channel Tres, whose signature coolness and lyrical poise slide effortlessly across the track’s slick production. From French touch elements to disco-funk influences, the result is a groove-driven anthem tailor-made for summer playlists.

The concept of “What You Need” was born during the 2020 pandemic in a writing session at MxNxSTxR’s LA studio, and its long-awaited release speaks to years of shared musical history between these artists. From Ty Dolla $ign’s past collaborations with DESTRUCTO on HARD events and Friendship cruises to Thundercat’s Grammy-winning work with Ty Dolla on “Fair Chance” and Channel Tres’ recent collaborations with both artists, the chemistry on this track runs deep.

With a foundation in Los Angeles nightlife and global electronic scenes, DESTRUCTO continues his legacy as a pioneer of g-house and a bridge between hip-hop, funk, and electronic music. His co-production here emphasizes texture, subtle groove, and undeniable rhythm—traits that have defined his career and festival empire alike.

As for Thundercat and Channel Tres, both bring fresh heat following recent major projects. Thundercat—who has worked with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, and Silk Sonic—has become a cross-genre icon, and his star continues to rise after appearances at Coachella and on NPR’s Tiny Desk. Meanwhile, Channel Tres’ debut album Head Rush marks a major artistic milestone, highlighting his evolution from underground innovator to genre-spanning storyteller.

“What You Need” is more than a one-off collab—it’s a celebration of rhythm, groove, and artistic synergy, showing what happens when four distinct voices come together to make something both timeless and future-facing.

The single is available now on all major streaming platforms via All My Friends / Empire.
