Acclaimed electronic musician, producer, and activist Moby has shared a new chapter in his musical journey with the release of his two-disc, 58-track remix album Always Centered At Night Remixes via Mute. The album, which follows his sold-out September 2024 EU/UK tour celebrating 25 years of Play, breathes new life into his 2023 original works, offering a collection of reimagined tracks that push the boundaries of electronic music.
The latest single from the album is the cosmic “Dark1 Remix” of “Wild Flame,” which features Danaé‘s shimmering vocals over loose congas, spacey synths, and intricate rhythms. Moby’s remix of his own tracks serves to amplify the emotional depth and sonic textures of the original compositions. Moby shares, “I felt that the collaborations on Always Centered At Night were each so special that I wanted to create remixes to give the vocals as many sonic backgrounds as possible.”
Even by Moby’s own standards, Always Centered At Night is a particularly special project, featuring 13 collaborations with both familiar names and emerging talents. Notable contributions include Lady Blackbird, whose soulful vocals drive the powerful lead single “Dark Days,” and serpentwithfeet on the achingly beautiful “On Air.” Other collaborators include Benjamin Zephaniah, whose spoken word piece “Where Is Your Pride?” delivers a compelling message over a breakbeat-driven backdrop, as well as Gaidaa, J.P. Bimeni, and Aynzli Jones, among others.
Moby explains the origins of the project: “Always Centered At Night is my way of working with special writers and vocalists to create songs inspired by the spirit of musical discovery.” The album’s eclectic mix spans genres, with highlights including the trip-hop influence of “We’re Going Wrong” featuring Brie O’Banion, the drum-and-bass inspired “Medusa” with Aynzli Jones, and the Latin house vibes of “Feelings Come Undone” featuring Raquel Rodriguez.
In his pursuit of new sounds, Moby has become a collector of voices, continuously searching for unique vocal textures to inspire his music. From sampling artists like Bessie Jones and Vera Hall to collaborating with icons like David Bowie and Britney Spears, Moby’s musical explorations have always centered on the power and beauty of the human voice.
Moby’s activism is also a central part of his identity, with his commitment to animal rights and veganism shaping much of his work. In addition to his music, Moby’s directorial debut, Punk Rock Vegan Movie, delves into the connection between punk rock and animal rights, featuring interviews with punk legends.
