Visionary DJ and producer Michel Cleis, best known for the iconic dance anthem “La Mezcla,” returns with a stunning reinterpretation of Joe Arroyo’s legendary Latin classic “La Tortuga.” Out July 18 via Altra Moda, the track bridges timeless salsa rhythms with modern dancefloor sensibilities, paying homage to a cultural staple while breathing new life into its hypnotic energy.
Over three years in the making, “La Tortuga” has already captured the attention of global tastemakers like Keinemusik, Luciano, and Bob Sinclar. Now, Cleis delivers a masterfully restrained rework that honors Arroyo’s 2009 hit, preserving its Afro-Caribbean essence while gently layering his signature deep house textures—soft kick drums, subtle hi-hats, and fluid groove architecture.
“La Tortuga was my first love in terms of traditional Colombian songs,” says Cleis. “Joey Arroyo’s music became part of my soundtrack during a long journey between Bogotá, Santa Marta, and Cartagena. We never cleared the sample until I met the Altra Moda team four years ago. I told them, ‘If you clear it, it could be fun to finally release it!’ And here we are, with a kind of rebirth and two new edits.”
First released in 2009, Joe Arroyo’s “La Tortuga” remains one of his most celebrated works—a vibrant blend of Colombian salsa and Afro-Caribbean flair that continues to resonate worldwide. Cleis’ interpretation takes that groove from the salsa club to the nightclub, transforming the track for a new generation without losing its soul.
Hailing from the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, Michel Cleis grew up surrounded by jazz, soul, rock, and Latin music. His breakout single “La Mezcla”—a sensual fusion of tribal percussion and Spanish vocals—became a global Ibiza hit in 2009, and helped define a wave of organic, percussive house music. Originally a psychologist, a basketball injury led him to music production and a career that would see him signed to Luciano’s Cadenza and releasing on labels like Pampa, Rekids, and Ovum.
Now, with “La Tortuga”, Michel Cleis offers a fresh chapter—an inspired crossover of cultural reverence and club-ready energy, cementing his role as one of the most dynamic artists in the global electronic landscape.
