LSDream commenced The Universal Wub Tour on 10/05 at the 1720 venue in downtown LA, which is just a couple miles down from the famous Theatre at Ace Motel. His main support through this tour is Shlump, a DJ who self-describes his style as “Alien bass musik.” Further support will come from a few other artists who are also under the Wakaan label, and a few outside the label.
While the name LSDream may be new to the scene, arriving in early 2018, the artist behind it is most certainly not. Formerly known as Brillz, Sami Diament began his career working behind the scenes with a number of different acts, including the makeup guru (also DJ/vocalist) Jeffree Star. In 2013, he was able to release his first album Twonk and continue his climb in the trap scene. Becoming a household name, he decided he needed a change, transitioning to a psychedelic future bass machine known as LSDream. Capitalizing on the success of his 2018 album Voyager, he followed up this year with Renegades of Light (a melodic, and at times impossibly bass deep, gem). This is an album that I highly recommend you listen to, right now!
Shlump is promoting his own recent EP release, System Crash, which came out this August. It definitely has an alien sound, with tracks ranging from the dub inspired “Spaceflight” to the bassy waves of “Bum Rush Dub.” Each track seems to have its own personality, with competing styles that somehow still all fit together. Killing it since 2013, he is a perfect partner on this tour, echoing similar strange sounds of LSDream.
The support on this tour will be pretty diverse: from the hip-hop-influenced drops of Digital Ethos, to the emotional vibrations of Dorfex Bos, and the aggressive riffs of Sayer. While these are my favorite of the supporting list, they will not be the only amazing artists making an appearance on this tour. Other stops will include DMVU, Inzo, Mystic Grizzly, Shanghai Doom, and Stylust. With only one of these artists being at each stop, it’s the perfect way to take in something you may not have made the opportunity to in the past. Sayer, Inzo, and DMVU have a single stop with LSDream and Shlump (Los Angeles, Houston, and San Francisco, respectively), while all other artists will support for two or more nights along the way.
LSDream happened to make a pit stop at Shady Park, an intimate, outdoor venue in downtown Tempe, AZ, but unfortunately, I was not able to make it. From what I heard, it was a wild time, with strange noises filling the desert air (and having seen him before, I only imagine how wonderful this was). This was not a tour stop, so Shlump was sadly absent from the night. The Universal Wub Tour will wrap up on 12/21 at Stereolive in Houston, TX. You owe it to yourself to catch one of the final shows for the year if you can. For more details on the tour, click here.
