DMV-via-New York City rapper and producer Kuru returns with their latest single “Noir kei,” alongside the announcement of their sophomore album Backstage hologram, arriving April 17. The new track follows lead single “FW19,” further previewing a project shaped by meticulous creative direction and a growing artistic vision. The forthcoming album is also set to feature appearances from xaviersobased, katmoji, and Lucy Bedroque.

At just 20 years old, Kuru has already spent nearly a decade shaping their sound, emerging as a defining force within the online hip-hop landscape. With Backstage hologram, that evolution reaches a new level of clarity. The album leans into a technoromantic aesthetic—drawing inspiration from artists like Hikaru Utada and IDM—while fusing industrial textures with melodic precision. The result is a cohesive body of work that channels the energy of internet-born hip-hop into something more refined and expansive.

Rooted in their DMV background and shaped by years spent immersed in digital culture, Kuru’s production balances sharp regional flows with a forward-thinking sonic palette. Across Backstage hologram, elements of trap, Japanese ambient music, and high fashion sensibilities collide, forming a distinct and immersive identity that continues to set them apart from their peers.

Since first uploading music to SoundCloud in 2019, Kuru has built a reputation for remarkably polished songwriting, with early tracks like “clueless,” “typo,” and “resolve” quickly gaining traction. More recent releases including “2door,” “my Baddd,” and “wakeup” have only expanded their reach, while production contributions to xaviersobased’s project Xavier further cemented their presence in the underground scene. Their collaborative network continues to grow, including work alongside jane Remover and Hi-C.

Beyond music, Kuru’s artistic vision extends into fashion, including modeling work for Yasuyuki Ishii, as featured in British Vogue. After graduating high school early, they relocated to New York City to pursue music full-time, partnering with deadAir to release their debut album re:wired in 2024. The project earned a 7.1 rating from Pitchfork, which described it as “a panic room crammed with miseries, victories, betrayals, realizations, and music so dreamy it somehow sounds idyllic.”

Following the release of “Stay True Forever,” a transitional tape that bridged their debut and sophomore era, Kuru now arrives at a defining moment with Backstage hologram. The album builds on the foundation of re:wired, transforming its chaotic, digitally driven core into a more focused and fully realized statement.

With Noir kei” setting the tone, Kuru’s sophomore effort stands as a testament to their rapid artistic growth—melding internet-era experimentation with emotional depth and stylistic precision, while signaling an artist fully coming into their own.
