Rising alt-electronic artist King Kaye has unveiled his latest project, The Dark Side of Enlightenment, a deeply personal six-track EP that captures the highs and lows of transformation. Entirely self-produced, written, and recorded, the project was mixed and mastered by Alex Poeppel (Roger Waters, Lil Nas X, Telescreens) at Kensaltown East NYC.

Drawing inspiration from the Fool’s Journey — a metaphorical tale of self-growth and life lessons — The Dark Side of Enlightenment chronicles a path from indulgence and escapism to clarity and awareness. Its themes are brought to life with heavy synths, ground-shaking bass, and raw lyricism that bridge the gap between vulnerability and empowerment.

Alongside the EP comes the focus single DESIRE, which delves into the aimless pursuit of wants as a distraction from pain. “One way that we find escape from hardships is by pursuing things that we desire aimlessly to easily distract us,” shares King Kaye. “Desires are such a powerful motive, and I knew I didn’t love myself or my current situations enough to be ready for a relationship.”

Throughout the project, contrast is the guiding principle. “In the creation of The Dark Side of Enlightenment, I knew as a prerequisite that it would emanate my favorite theory in art – contrast,” says King Kaye. “The lowest frequencies of ground-shaking bass and the highest screams of synthesizers give a minimalistic yet powerful message. I saw imagery; black and white, large and small, close and far. I heard dialogue and wrote a story – with all these compositions put together, the common theme was awareness, understanding, and enlightenment.”

The EP journeys through standout moments like the synth-heavy “Enlighten Me”, which takes visual inspiration from Tarot’s The Hermit and The Magician, and “LET IT FREE!”, a cathartic outcry against societal control. Closing track “FIGHT!” — previously praised by Glasse Factory as “an electrifying single that fuses twisting synths and deep textures into a sonic experience” — serves as an anthem for resilience and survival.

Since its release, the project has already captured attention from outlets like Ones To Watch, Long Island Herald, Grimy Goods, V13, New Scene, Fresh Music Freaks, NOCTIS, Noisescapes, and Eat This Music, underscoring King Kaye’s rising momentum.

A New York native and natural-born musician, King Kaye began DJing at just nine years old before making his own beats by age 12. His 2020 quarantine project Nothing But A Pipe Dream featured “AS THE SUN FALLS,” which premiered on the big screen at his hometown theater. In 2023, his project The Status Quo spotlighted “ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING?”, later featured as 90.7FM WFUV’s NY Slice. He has since graced stages across NYC, performing at The Bowery Electric, Berlin Under the A, Ki Smith Gallery, and Baker Falls, while also appearing on Street Hearts with Tiff.

With The Dark Side of Enlightenment, King Kaye offers a raw and resonant sonic journey — a meditation on awareness, contrast, and self-discovery, delivered with his signature electronic edge.
