For Jonas Blue, the connection to “Madan” runs deep. The producer first discovered the record at just 12 years old in a London record shop, where the iconic remix by Martin Solveig left a lasting impression and became a formative influence during his early years exploring dance music. Decades later, he now revisits the track that helped shape his musical identity—this time with a fresh perspective and unprecedented access to the original session materials.
“When I was 12 years old, I discovered Madan by Salif Keïta remixed by Martin Solveig in a London record shop – and it’s stayed with me ever since,” Jonas Blue explains. “When I was invited to create a new version, it meant so much to me that it initially felt untouchable. But once I received the original session stems, everything changed. There were beautiful, unheard parts from Salif and his band that never made it into the remix the world knows. It felt like uncovering a hidden treasure.”
Drawing from these previously unheard elements, Jonas Blue blends the original track’s traditional African instrumentation and vocals with his signature melodic dance sound. Groovy basslines and new harmonic arrangements complement the jazzy warmth of Keïta’s performance, creating a version that feels both contemporary and deeply respectful of its roots.
“My goal was to honour the spirit of the original while bringing it into my world sonically,” Jonas Blue says. “Blending those African instruments and vocals with the sound I’m known for today. I’ll never forget the first time I played it out. It was at Pacha Ibiza during the Defected Records closing party – my final show of the summer. I remember mixing it in and just feeling this incredible moment on the dancefloor. It sounded and felt fresh, emotional and completely different to everything else in my set. Madan is timeless, and I’m proud to introduce its magic to a whole new generation.”
