Portland-based producer FENRA returns with his new single “EMERALDS,” set for release on May 15 via Base Layer Records, continuing a run of deeply immersive, emotionally driven electronic music that has steadily positioned him as one of the more distinctive voices in contemporary left-field production.
Built around fractured percussion, granular textures, and a constantly evolving melodic structure, “EMERALDS” unfolds like a shifting sonic environment rather than a traditional club track. Across its two-and-a-half-minute runtime, the single expands and contracts with a hypnotic sense of motion, layering soft rhythmic detail beneath swirling synths and atmospheric fragments that gradually converge into a cinematic finale.
The track’s structure emphasizes evolution over repetition, with ideas continuously reshaped and refracted as the piece progresses. UK garage-inspired rhythmic elements emerge subtly within the percussive framework, while expansive synth layers build toward a closing sequence that feels both tense and transcendent.
FENRA describes the creative process behind the track as one rooted in texture and transformation. “‘EMERALDS’ started with some chords and vocal fragments that I kept sampling, resampling, and reshaping until it became almost like a living texture underneath the track,” he explained. “I intentionally kept the drums soft and distant because I wanted the song to feel less like a traditional dance record and more like a small atmospheric world you could disappear into.”
That approach aligns closely with FENRA’s broader artistic identity. The project is the electronic alias of producer B Laws, whose musical foundation was shaped early by exposure to church hymns and choral harmony alongside his grandmother. After teaching himself guitar at 14, he went on to experiment with synths, vocals, and live instrumentation in bands that toured across the United States, Europe, and Asia, experiences that now inform his more introspective electronic work.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Caribou, Four Tet, Floating Points, Bonobo, and DJ Koze, FENRA’s sound occupies a space where cinematic composition and club-adjacent rhythm intersect. His 2025 EP Delusional earned critical support from outlets including Magnetic Magazine, CLASH Magazine, Electronic Groove, and When We Dip, further establishing his reputation within the ambient and experimental electronic space.
Previous coverage of his work has highlighted the emotional depth and textural precision of his production. Electronic Groove praised his focus track “CHICAGO” for its “expansive emotionality,” while CLASH Magazine described “DEEPCUT” as a slow-burning blend of tension and release. Elsewhere, Magnetic Magazine emphasized his ability to construct “dreamy compositions” where time feels fluid and immersive, while Vents Magazine noted the spacious reinterpretation of his remix work, particularly in its ability to foreground vocal emotion within dub-tinged atmospheres.
On “EMERALDS,” those ideas converge into a more refined and focused statement. The track continues FENRA’s exploration of sound as environment—less about peak-time energy and more about emotional immersion, where subtle shifts in texture carry as much weight as rhythm or melody.

The result is a piece that sits comfortably alongside artists such as Burial, Jon Hopkins, and Bicep, while still maintaining a distinct identity rooted in organic sound design and introspective composition. It is a continuation of FENRA’s ongoing effort to blur the line between electronic production and experiential storytelling.
With “EMERALDS,” FENRA further solidifies his position within a growing wave of producers redefining ambient and left-field electronica—crafting music that feels less like a performance and more like a space to inhabit.
