Berlin-based producer and DJ Elninodiablo (aka Stephanos Pantelas) steps into his boldest chapter yet with the release of his debut album The Downey Groove, out now on his own imprint El Niño Diablo Music. To mark the release, he’s celebrating with a party at Lunchbox Candy, the queer-led night he curates at Kreuzwerk that has become one of Berlin’s most sought-after underground experiences, known for its boundary-pushing performances, a sex worker-run Loveroom, and crowds surpassing 2,000. The party has already headlined WHOLE Festival and is on the radar for Sydney Mardi Gras 2026.
Conceived in the mountains of Cyprus during an extended solo retreat, the album reflects a process of surrender and instinct. Armed with just a laptop, headphones, and a field recorder, Pantelas allowed intuition to lead, transforming raw sketches into a lush eight-track journey. The record traverses dub-soaked electronics, psychedelic textures, and sensual grooves, each track radiating emotional nuance and rhythmic depth. From the woozy atmospheres of “Purple Hypnotic” and funk-driven swerves of “Misteriosa Noche” to the bass-heavy ritualism of “The Soul Monad” and the cosmic lift-off of “Subadrift,” the album unfolds like an odyssey. Playful detours like “Rodeotheque” and the percussive drive of the title track expand the palette, before closing with the hypnotic dub of “Rise In Dub” and the intimate synth warmth of “Operator Please!”
Though no strict concept guided the process, themes of release, rebirth, and feminine embodiment emerged naturally. “It begins with an impulse in the body, a need to express. The meaning only becomes clear once the music is done,” Elninodiablo explains. For him, rhythm and bass became a vehicle for healing and liberation, a current mirrored by the vibrant, otherworldly artwork created by Tobias Jacobsen.
With a sound that defies genre—spatial, fearless, emotive, and deeply physical—Elninodiablo creates music that demands both surrender and transformation. His eclectic journey informs the record: from pirate radio beginnings in Cyprus, to DJing at London’s queer underground landmarks like The End, Turnmills, and Fabric, to a career in PR representing Horse Meat Disco, Salsoul Records, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Tegan & Sara, Strut Records, and !K7. Studies at Berlin’s Catalyst Music at the Funkhaus refined his craft, while global travels infused his sound with a breadth of cultural influence.
Outside the studio, Elninodiablo continues to cultivate Lunchbox Candy as a hub for radical sound, visual experimentation, and embodied expression. That same daring spirit animates every beat of The Downey Groove, which he describes as “a womb-like slap in the face and a warm, gentle cuddle.”
With this release, Elninodiablo affirms his place as a vital force in electronic music, weaving personal narrative, underground culture, and fearless experimentation into a record that is both deeply intimate and expansively universal.
