From October 6th to 8th, The Dirtybird crew and The Do Lab will join forces once again for the 2017 rendition of The Dirtybird Campout. Dirtybird Records is based out of Los Angeles and was originally founded by Barclay Crenshaw aka Claude Von Stroke in January 2005 in San Francisco after he relocated from Detroit in the year 2000.
Dirtybird is known for specializing in what they refer to as “tech funk”, taking a more laid back approach than your typical commercial dance music and bringing those Cali vibes to the dance floor, Dirtybird has quickly managed to reach the masses throughout America. They managed to win an IDMA award for “Underground Label of The Year” in 2013 and 2014 and Barclay tends to take a hands-on approach with everything, even shipping over 100 bundles of CDs to artists with handwritten notes when he first started the label. He even is rumored to listen to every single demo he receives personally, handpicking and curating the music released on his label.
The first Dirtybird Campout took place in 2015 in Silverado, California with the help of The Do Lab, who helps organize Lightning in A Bottle and Woogie Weekend in 2015 and 2016 as well as hosts a stage at Coachella. For the first 2 years, Dirtybird Campout took place at the same location as Woogie Weekend and this year will take place at the same location as Lightning in a Bottle in Bradley, California.
Dirtybird tends to cater to an older crowd and demographic but also has drawn interest from millineals as well with its heavy bass-ridden undertones and funky sound. The first rendition of Dirtybird Campout in 2015 featured artists such as Breach, Lee Foss, Benoit & Sergio, and Route 94 with a late night lodge with Christian Martin, Barclay Crenshaw, and The Martin Brothers as well as a ton of fun and games and activities one would expect at a summer camp. 2016 saw the likes of Reggie Watts, Green Velvet, Paranoid London, and Mr. Carmack.
With the Dirtybird crew continuously growing, Dirtybird Campout will return in 2017 at a new venue and location in Bradley, California at The San Antonio Campgrounds. Bicycles and Motorbikes will be allowed as well as vehicles. Gril$on will be providing BBQ with a DIY salad bar. Artists, attendees, and crew will all be one in the same with artists partaking in activities along with the campers.
There is a talent show, lap dance musical chairs, camper comedy hour, and a beatbox competition as well as late night bingo and karaoke. Other activities such as Yoga and field games will also take place as well as arts & crafts, competitions, digital detox, and numerous tournaments. New for 2017 is totem crafting, dance classes, a science lab, and a bike race. There is even stargazing and bird watching as well as simon says, screenprinting, and a 3-day survival series.
This year’s lineup will include Claude VonStroke and Barclay Crenshaw of course as well as the usual suspects, Justin Martin, Christian Martin, Kill Frenzy, J. Phlip, Worthy, and Shiba San as well as Coyu, Eats Everything, Gene Farris, Matthew Dear, and even Cut Snake and Araabmuzik will take to the stage this year. Madlib will also be performing a special DJ Set for the 2017 Dirtybird Campout Festival.
