Acclaimed composer and left-of-center indie folk pop songwriter Dash Hammerstein returns with a charmingly offbeat new single, “Noise Machine,” offering the first glimpse into his forthcoming self-titled album, Dash Hammerstein, arriving February 13.

Built around a quietly humorous but deeply relatable concept, “Noise Machine” explores modern comfort through artificial sound. “It’s a simple song inspired by my reliance on the ‘cabin downpour’ setting on my white noise app,” Hammerstein explains. “Sometimes when it is raining outside, I will close the window and play the fake rain sound to fall asleep.” The track leans into that gentle absurdity, pairing warm indie-folk textures with playful woodwind flourishes arranged and performed by Michael Sachs. Inspired by White Album–era McCartney and old musical hall recordings, the instrumentation adds a whimsical, slightly theatrical character that mirrors the song’s tongue-in-cheek meditation on choosing the artificial over the real.

While “Noise Machine” highlights Hammerstein’s wry lyrical voice, it also reflects the seasoned craftsmanship of an artist whose career spans both the indie music world and the screen. As a composer, Dash Hammerstein has scored projects for Netflix, Hulu, HBO, PBS, and more, with work that has premiered at Sundance, Tribeca Film Festival, and DOC NYC. His compositional style blends modern production with the ramshackle melodicism of artists like Moondog and Brian Eno, creating soundscapes that feel both intimate and cinematic.

Outside of film and television, Hammerstein has built an extensive catalog as a recording artist, releasing ten studio albums that drift between Kinks-inflected folk pop and neo-classical composition. His music has also found a global audience through commercial licensing with brands such as Adidas and Toyota. In recent years, he has expanded into NYC’s theater community, writing and consulting on musicals currently in development.

The upcoming album, Dash Hammerstein, marks a particularly personal chapter. Created during a period of newfound creative sobriety, the record is described as his most direct and emotionally grounded work to date. “No more word salad psychedelia,” he shares. “Each song is about something specific and meaningful, be it death, uncertainty, old friends or new biotech.” With his writing routine shifting from late nights to early mornings, many of the songs were written quickly over coffee, capturing a “first thought, best thought” immediacy.

The album also features a close-knit circle of collaborators, including Michael Sachs on woodwinds and brass, Jordi Nus on strings, and Alden Harris-McCoy on guest guitar. True to his DIY ethos, everything was recorded and mixed by Hammerstein himself across several studios in Brooklyn.

With “Noise Machine,” Dash Hammerstein sets the tone for a record that balances sincerity with subtle humor, polished composition with handmade charm — a fitting introduction to his most honest musical statement yet.
