Darude Sandstorm Run Set for Helsinki to Celebrate 25 Years of Iconic Track

In a high-energy tribute to one of Finland’s most legendary music exports, the Darude Sandstorm Run is set to take place on Sunday, August 31 in Helsinki, just days before the Finnish stop of Darude’s STORM 25 World Tour. The unique six-kilometre run will guide participants through iconic locations featured in the original 2000 “Sandstorm” music video—marking a full-circle moment in the career of the globally renowned DJ and producer.

Runners will pass instantly recognizable landmarks such as Kaivopuisto and the steps of the Helsinki Cathedral, where the video’s adrenaline-charged chase scene famously began. Darude himself will be at the event, cheering on fans and personally awarding prizes for the best dressed participants who channel the spirit of the video.

“It’s amazing to celebrate my career right where it all began,” says Darude. “The Sandstorm video is still watched around the world, and it’s incredible to see it come alive again through the runners. I hope as many people as possible join us to have fun and get moving.”

The event, organized by Finnish fitness company Vauhtisammakko, encourages both solo runners and teams to dress in themed outfits. Awards will be given in individual, pair, and group costume categories. Prizes include a meet & greet with Darude, group photo ops, and tickets to the Helsinki STORM 25 concert at Kattilahalli on Saturday, September 6.

“We’re getting people of all ages moving through the power of music and supporting one of the most important societal goals—physical activity for children and youth,” says Mikko Liukka, founder and head coach of Vauhtisammakko. “This is above all for the fans, and also an investment in the future.”

Sandstorm, Darude’s explosive debut single, became a global phenomenon upon its release in early 2000. With over 500 million streams on Spotify and more than 300 million views on YouTube, the track continues to energize sports arenas, clubs, and memes worldwide. Its enduring popularity catapulted Darude into an international career spanning 25 years, five studio albums, and countless tour stops around the globe.

The STORM 25 World Tour, already drawing tens of thousands in New Zealand, the U.S., and across Europe, touches down in Helsinki the weekend after the run. But for Finnish fans, the celebration starts early.

Early bird tickets (€39) for the Darude Sandstorm Run go on sale Friday, May 16 at 8:00 AM CET / 07:00 AM GMT via Vauhtisammakko, with prices rising to €59 after June 30. For full details, visit the event page at vauhtisammakko.com (or local ticketing site if applicable).

Whether you’re a lifelong fan, a fitness enthusiast, or just love a good throwback, this run offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to relive a piece of dance music history—where it all began, with the man who started the storm.
