Out on Dim Mak on August 8, Dani Thorne and CRUNCHi deliver “GOD IS A DJ,” a pounding, industrial-leaning techno cut charged with underground grit, hypnotic rhythms, and an intoxicating vocal performance from CRAY. Blending hardstyle energy with sultry wit, the track celebrates the “Father, Son, and Holy Rave,” blurring the lines between sacred devotion and the hedonistic release of the dancefloor.
The accompanying music video immerses viewers in a shadowy world, following three women into an illicit rave held inside a decaying church—a fitting visual for a record where the DJ is both divine and unapologetically feminine.
Reflecting on the creative process, Dani Thorne shared, “When CRAY came up with the line ‘God is a DJ,’ we knew instantly that was the theme. The instrumental had already been tested out by CRUNCHi and me months earlier, but once that lyric entered the picture, we revisited the entire production to capture the essence of this idea. For us, the rave is our church—we connect, express, and worship through music.”
CRUNCHi added, “‘GOD IS A DJ’ began in August 2024 as a raw sketch I sent to Dani Thorne. That early version was called ‘Tight Dress,’ but over time, we reimagined the song completely. The turning point came when we brought in CRAY—her vocals transformed the track and gave it its true identity. From underground warehouse sets to massive festival stages, it’s become one of the most powerful moments in our shows, not just for its sound but for its meaning. This song is a celebration of the sacred chaos of the rave.”
Both a high-energy club weapon and a unifying mantra, “GOD IS A DJ” stands as a testament to the transformative power of dance music and the communal spirit of the underground.
