Damian Lazarus, the visionary force behind Crosstown Rebels, has released his fifth studio album, Magickal, marking a daring departure from industry norms. The album lands as a shock drop, foregoing the staggered single-release trend to offer an immersive, cohesive artistic experience from the outset.
“With Magickal, I wanted to do things differently,” Damian shares. “This is about returning to the idea of an album as a complete artistic statement. After the release, we’ll explore the music with singles, remixes, and a world tour where I plan to present the album in innovative ways.”
The album’s release aligns with Day Zero, Damian’s iconic festival set in the lush Mexican jungles of Tulum. Celebrating the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012, Day Zero has evolved into a cultural beacon, blending music, cutting-edge production, and respect for local traditions. The ethos of this transformative festival mirrors the themes of Magickal, which delves into unity, transcendence, and connection.
Crafted during a pivotal time in Damian’s life, Magickal channels newfound sobriety and clarity into its sound. Collaborators span the globe, with highlights including the Bloom Twins on the pop-infused “Alive,” Méstiza on the flamenco-laden “La Hija De Juan Simón,” and Jojo Abot on the amapiano-inspired “Warrior Dance.” Additional contributions from TEED, A-Trak, and Mathew Jonson elevate the album’s depth, while Zoe Kypri’s soulful vocals shine on “So Low.”
Tracks like “Sunrise Generation” featuring Fink and the luminous single “Searchin’” with Jem Cooke reflect moments of awe and transcendence, hallmarks of Damian’s artistry. Accompanying the album, Radio Slave’s remix of “Searchin’” provides a fresh perspective.
The Magickal World Tour kicks off with Day Zero on January 11, before spanning four continents with over 40 stops, including headline shows at iconic venues across the US and festival appearances worldwide. Notably, the tour features DEKAY, a magician performing illusions to heighten the live experience. Damian’s performances at Coachella and his residency at Hï Ibiza further highlight the tour.
