Claude VonStroke, the celebrated pioneer of North America’s underground dance music scene, is officially back. After a two-year hiatus following the sale of his legendary Dirtybird brand, the visionary producer and DJ is re-emerging with a renewed artistic spirit, kicking off a new era with the release of his ‘I Was The Wolf’ EP and the launch of the “Life of Leisure” tour — both set to begin on April 25 at New York City’s Knockdown Center.
The two-track EP, ‘I Was The Wolf’, showcases a deeper, darker evolution of the VonStroke sound. Leaning into cinematic textures and minimal Berlin-style grooves, the record is both introspective and mischievously offbeat — a trademark only he could deliver. The A-side, “I Was The Wolf,” draws from analog experimentation, including eerie synths from a rare Dreabox Murmux, while the B-side, “Move With The Pack,” folds in rich, jazzy layers that provide a textural contrast — a reminder of VonStroke’s love for genre-bending storytelling.
“My little brother Alex used to call me garage boy because I would lock myself in the garage for 12–14 hours at a time and never come out,” says VonStroke, reflecting on his early days of tape splicing and hardware exploration. “That garage boy has returned! I’m nerding out in the studio again, except now I can touch the synths without the electro-shock therapy.”
Following the EP’s release, VonStroke embarks on his “Life of Leisure” tour — a personal and carefully crafted global run that mirrors his evolved philosophy. The tour will stop at venues that hold special meaning to him, including CODA in Toronto, Space in Miami, and a slew of major festivals such as Lightning in a Bottle, Movement Detroit, and Osheaga. International dates include iconic clubs like KOKO in London and Panorama Bar in Berlin.
“Life of Leisure is a state of mind,” he says. “It has nothing to do with money or status. It means being free in your head, doing what you want, and saying no to everything else… For the few hours we spend together on the dancefloor, we can vibe out and live this life care-free.”
