A seminal deep cut from Carl Craig’s vault, “The Truth”—originally released in 2000 under his one-off alias Designer Music—is now available digitally for the first time. The re-edited and remastered track arrives today via Planet E Communications, coinciding with the upcoming release of the Desire: The Carl Craig Story – Official Soundtrack, set to drop digitally on June 20, 2025, with 2×12” vinyl and CD editions following on July 18, 2025.

Originally the B-side to “Problemz”, “The Truth” finds the pioneering Detroit techno producer in his most introspective form, echoing the moody atmospheres of timeless 69 cuts like “Desire” and “At Les”—both of which appear on the full soundtrack. The collection spans Carl Craig’s prolific discography, showcasing his many aliases and side projects, including previously unreleased digital material. Also featured are landmark tracks like “No More Words” from 1991 and his Grammy-nominated remix for Junior Boys.

The release acts as the sonic companion to Jean-Cosme Delaloye’s new documentary Desire: The Carl Craig Story, a deeply personal portrait of the artist’s journey from Detroit’s middle-class neighborhoods to international recognition, set against the backdrop of his hometown’s post-industrial evolution. Produced by Sovereign Films, the film also highlights Craig’s contributions to contemporary art and fashion, including his Party/After-Party installation—now part of the Detroit Institute of Arts permanent collection—and collaborations with Bottega Veneta.

Desire features commentary from iconic voices in the global electronic scene including Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald, and James Lavelle, celebrating Craig’s role as a champion of Detroit’s Black creative excellence and the African-American foundations of electronic music.

After its 2024 premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, the documentary opened theatrically on May 8, screening in 30 theaters across the UK and Ireland, with a U.S. release slated for later this summer. As part of Movement Festival’s official programming, Michigan Central will host special screenings of Desire on May 22 and 23, honoring Craig at The Station—a historic Detroit landmark that has long inspired his work.

With Desire: The Carl Craig Story and its accompanying soundtrack, fans and newcomers alike are invited to rediscover the legacy of a true visionary—one whose influence on electronic music, both sonically and culturally, continues to reverberate far beyond Detroit.
