Carl Craig, the visionary Detroit techno pioneer, has unveiled plans for the official soundtrack to his forthcoming documentary Desire: The Carl Craig Story, directed by Jean-Cosme Delaloye. The soundtrack, arriving via Craig’s influential Planet E Recordings, serves as a sweeping sonic retrospective of his trailblazing career—featuring selections from his extensive catalog and several rare tracks that have never been available digitally until now.
Leading the soundtrack’s release is the single “No More Words,” which drops today. Originally released in 1991, the track has become a cornerstone of the Detroit techno sound. Now, for the first time, it’s available on digital platforms—marking a significant moment not only for Craig but for fans of electronic music worldwide. With its warm synth pads, hypnotic rhythms, and forward-thinking production, “No More Words” captures the soul of a genre that reshaped club culture across the globe.
The documentary Desire: The Carl Craig Story charts Craig’s journey from middle-class Detroit to international acclaim, set against the city’s industrial collapse and cultural resurgence. The film explores Craig’s deep roots in Black electronic music and highlights his work at the intersection of music, art, and fashion. From his collaborative work with Bottega Veneta to the critically acclaimed installation Party/After-Party—which was recently acquired by the Detroit Institute of Arts and shown at MOCA Los Angeles—the documentary reveals the multidisciplinary force of Carl Craig’s creativity.
Produced by Sovereign Films, the film features interviews with key cultural figures and longtime collaborators including Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald, and James Lavelle, all of whom speak to Craig’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to honoring the Black roots of techno and electronic music.
Desire: The Carl Craig Story will premiere in theaters across the UK and Ireland on May 8, with a US release to follow. The documentary and its soundtrack promise to reignite global appreciation for Detroit techno while cementing Carl Craig’s place in the canon of musical innovators.
