Afro House heavyweights Black Motion and Prince Kaybee have unveiled striking new remixes of Karmacoda’s ‘Time’, released via Sola Musa Music. The reworks bring fresh energy to the San Franciscan duo’s introspective original, transforming it into a powerful Afro House statement that has already drawn global support.
Prince Kaybee’s remix, released on February 13, quickly gained traction across leading electronic platforms including YourEDM, alongside tastemaker outlets Music In Africa, SlikourOnLife, and Vicious Magazine. Meanwhile, Black Motion’s version, released on March 6, continued that momentum with additional support from YourEDM, RTÉ 2FM, and further coverage from Music In Africa and SIX AM.
A platinum-selling producer and multi-award-winning artist, Prince Kaybee has cemented his place at the forefront of Afro House. With multiple South African Music Awards wins—including Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album, and Album of the Year—alongside a Best Dance Album victory at the Metro FM Music Awards, his influence extends far beyond the dancefloor. His collaborations with artists such as Shimza, Busiswa, Lady Zamar, and Ami Faku, as well as recognition from TIME’s “10 Best Songs of 2020” for ‘Uwrongo’, underscore his global reach.
Since forming in 2010, Black Motion—comprised of Thabo Mabogwane and Kabelo Koma—have built a reputation for their deeply rooted, percussion-driven sound. With releases on Defected Records and multiple wins at the South African Music Awards, including Best Duo/Group and Best Dance Album, the duo have also earned Gold and Platinum certifications and delivered standout performances on NPR Tiny Desk Concerts.
On the other side, Karmacoda bring a genre-blurring identity shaped over two decades, weaving together elements of electronica, trip-hop, R&B, and dream pop. Their work has attracted remixes from respected producers including Extrawelt, Oliver Schories, and Tobias Bergson, reinforcing their position within the global electronic landscape.
Originally featured on their 2022 album Lessons In Time, ‘Time’ explores themes of introspection and regret through layered piano chords, subtle autotuned vocals, and a hypnotic melodic structure. The track features Jessica Ford, Brett Crockett, and Eric Matsuno, whose combined performances give the original its emotional depth.
Both remixes elevate that foundation into Afro House territory. Prince Kaybee injects a driving bassline that anchors the track, while delicate piano arpeggios build an emotional arc that moves between melancholy and uplift. Black Motion take a more rhythmic approach, layering kinetic percussion and hypnotic synth work that preserves the soul of the original while amplifying its dancefloor impact. Together, the reworks position ‘Time’ alongside the sounds of artists like Zakes Bantwini, Caiiro, Culoe De Song, Sun-El Musician, and Black Coffee.
Reflecting on the release, Black Motion shared: “The ‘Time’ remix was born from a conversation with the ancestors, a reminder that time is not just counted, it is felt in the drum and carried in the spirit. We approached it as a ritual in sound, where rhythm becomes memory and melody becomes prayer. It is our offering to the eternal pulse that guides us beyond the clock.”
Prince Kaybee added: “When I make music I see color, so the vocals on the original remind me of blue and I usually associate blue with a mild cold or a subtle fresh breeze. So before I did the remix I needed to find its color—that’s how it started.”
With both remixes now in circulation, Black Motion and Prince Kaybee have reimagined ‘Time’ into a transcendent Afro House experience—one that bridges introspection and rhythm while continuing to expand the global reach of the genre.
