Anjunadeep favorite Ben Böhmer has had one exciting year and is on his way to start 2020 in all-star fashion. In 2019 alone, he’s toured all over the world and played at some of the biggest shows; ABGT Weekender at The Gorge, Anjunadeep Explorations, and was joined by a full band for a one of a kind live tour. Just this past week he released his debut album ‘Breathing’ on Anjunadeep and is set to have a coinciding North American live tour starting in February.
‘Breathing’ is everything you would expect from Böhmer; deep, dark, and progressive. The album takes you on a wave of emotions and is somber at one moment but then takes a lighter, hopeful turn and lifts you with the melodies and instrumentals.
The title track ‘Breathing’ is already a dancefloor favorite having been road-tested over the summer at countless clubs and festivals. This song totally encompasses the feeling of the release; dramatic, melodic, and reflective. ‘Wall of Strings’ is all-instrumental and is beautifully arranged. It’s driving bass beats, elegant piano undertones and graceful strings, which is a sample from The Cinematic Orchestra, provide a brilliant soul-touching track.
‘Voyager 1’ opens up with the classic Böhmer sound. Bold basslines and an atmospheric groove that gives way to otherworldly effects which give off a futuristic feel. I’ve had ‘Blackhole‘ on repeat since I first heard the release on Above & Beyond’s ABGT 350 Deep Set. This song is a collaboration with German vocalist Monolink and is truly outstanding. Monolink provides graceful haunting vocals and when combined with Bohmers driving deep dark beats, it makes for one powerful release.
The album concludes with ‘Little Lights’ which starts light and airy with smooth beats and brings in delicate vocals to tie the track together and provide a harmonizing and passionate delivery. The end of the album leaves you wanting more and if you are anything like me you put it on repeat and listened to it all over again. Böhmer is a remarkably talented producer and multi-instrumentalist and a true force in the electronic music scene.
