Following the announcement of her forthcoming album Written into Changes, set for release on 20 March via Dead Oceans, multi-hyphenate musician and producer Avalon Emerson & the Charm delivers a new taste of the record with the title track. The single arrives with a performance video recorded in Avalon Emerson’s home studio alongside collaborators Hunter Lombard and Keivon Mehdi Hobeheidar, highlighting the intimate, collaborative spirit that defines the project.
Speaking about the track, Avalon Emerson explains, “Sometimes change barrels down tracks, announced by a high loud whistle. Other times it flows seasonally over sand, carving a canyon. ‘Written into Changes’ is a song about moving across the world and turning chapters in life. This song came together in London with Bullion, Hunter, and Keivon.”
Written into Changes is a memoiristic album exploring not only the acceptance of change but embracing it fully. The record reflects five years of constant movement, including multinational DJing and relocations from Berlin to Los Angeles to New York, revealing itself geographically and over time. The album builds on the foundation laid by the first & the Charm album, while expanding into a band-driven, groove-heavy, and dance-adjacent sound.
“This time, I thought carefully about dynamics and energy and how songs might be performed live,” Emerson notes. “The first album was soft, kind of bedroomy, and performing it on a festival stage was a learning experience. For this album, we wanted something that could exist both on record and in performance.” Previously shared singles “Eden” and “Jupiter and Mars” also appear on the new record, signaling a clear evolution in Avalon Emerson & the Charm’s sound.
The album was shaped by a collaborative cohort including Nathan Jenkins (Bullion), who co-produced & the Charm and returned to handle much of the new material, with co-production from Rostam Batmanglij (formerly of Vampire Weekend) and contributions from Keivon Mehdi Hobeheidar. Multi-instrumentalist Jay Flew participated in early writing sessions, while Hunter Lombard contributed guitar. Initial recording sessions took place in Braintree, England, during the winter and spring of 2024, with additional tracks completed in Los Angeles, and synth elements added at the Synth Cabin at Rosen Sound in Glendale, California. The “& the Charm” moniker emphasizes a collaborative entity rather than a fixed band, highlighting the fluid, collective approach to Avalon Emerson’s creative output.
Avalon Emerson has established herself as a respected DJ and dynamic artist, beginning in San Francisco’s warehouse scene before moving to Berlin, where she performed for over a decade at legendary venues including Berghain. Returning to the United States and based in upstate New York, she has continued to expand her musical scope. The 2023 album & the Charm introduced the live band element to her work, showcasing her range from euphoric high-BPM dance tracks to intimate indie pop. In 2025, she released a modern rework of Moby’s “E After Next” as part of her Perpetual Emotion Machine series on Dead Oceans, further establishing her experimental approach.
To celebrate the release of Written into Changes, Avalon Emerson & the Charm will embark on a European tour with shows in Manchester, London, Paris, Berlin, and more. In the U.S., she will headline shows in California, following a performance at C2C Festival in New York City in May. Earlier in the year, Avalon Emerson will perform DJ sets in Los Angeles at Skyline LA, as well as festival appearances at Lightning in a Bottle in Bakersfield, California, Down The Rabbit Hole in Ewijk, Netherlands, and Kappa FuturFestival in Turin, Italy.
