Mia Moretti Shares First Single Off Forthcoming EP, “Tambor”

“Tambor” is Mia Moretti’s first release off of her forthcoming EP, Tambor, which features samples and original recordings from Afro-Colombian artists Totó la Momposina and Petrona Martínez. The EP was recorded in Colombia earlier this year.

The debut track of the EP features the legendary Totó la Momposina. Before the first beat even drops, we are introduced to Totó’s earth-shattering voice, which Moretti envelopes with a swell of percussion, a driving bass line, and a single trumpet that sets a dark, moody tone that unapologetically takes possession of the dance floor.

I feel a connection between modern dance music and the ancestral Afro-Colombian music of artists like Totó la Momposina. Their songs are matriarchal anthems that are the driving force of community. The chants, call-and-repeat refrains, and grounding drums connect people to the earth and to each other – the original bullerengues and cumbias held villages together. ‘Tambor’ is meant to do the same – I believe house music is built on a pulse that brings us into a deep trance – this trance connects us.

“Totó’s instrument is her voice and with it she asserts, connects, and heals. I wanted to honor her – the wise woman everyone stops to listen to,” says Moretti, “these are the women who inspire me to make the music I do and continue to share it, and them, with the world.”
