A Duo Of Russian DJ Duos | VOLAC and Phlegmatic Dogs | Interview

by The Freaks - Staff

What do you get when you combine bass and house music? A very unique sound that has been perfected by the likes of VOLAC and Phlegmatic Dogs. These two DJ duos are known for their presence on Night Bass Records and their ability to rock a crowd with their banging beats.

Russia’s finest in bass house music took some time out of their extremely busy tour schedule to have a few words with us. I hope you enjoy hearing what they had to say as much as we did.

FMF: Your music provides such a unique sound that incorporates house and bass music. Where do you get the inspiration for these tracks when you get into the studio?

VOLAC and Phlegmatic Dogs: There’s a different story for every different day. Sometimes one of us brings a new idea to the studio and we try to work on it. Other times we just listen and discuss new vibes. You never really know what’s going to actually work.

When you do studio work, what is the most frustrating part of the process? What is the most rewarding part?

It depends on the track. Most of the time it’s the arrangement and final mixing that’s the most frustrating part. The most rewarding part is to make groovy vibes and add new sounds to it.

You’ve recently joined forces on the EP, ‘Russian Style’. What was it like working together on this?

It was very comfortable to work together on the EP. Our sounds are really similar and we can exchange a lot of ideas without a language barrier.

You’re also currently on tour together. Do you have any wild stories that have happened in the time you’ve been on tour? What has been your favorite stop on the tour so far? What stop are you looking forward to most?

Our tour started a few days ago, and one of the first stops was New York. One of the days we were there we went to Brighton Beach, which is known for being a Russian area. The area looks like Russia back in the 90’s. It had a lot of old school things like VHS, DVDs, signs on the restaurants, bakeries and barber shops. One thing you should know, though — it’s a fake Russia. If you want to try real Russian food this isn’t the best place to do it.

As I mentioned earlier, you recently released an EP together. What else do you have in the works for new music?

We have some unreleased stuff that we are testing out on the Russian Style Tour right now.

One last question; you both have very interesting DJ names, so where did each of your names come from?

Volac: A while ago we had a track with a lot of vocals in it. We tried to save a lot of variations of the track and we made a mistake and spelt it, “Volac”. We ended up loving it and the name stuck.

Phlegmatic Dogs: Our name was a random choice. The inspiration behind it comes from a dog’s street life. We feel like our souls are like this.
