In times like these, we are all look for little things or the silver linings to bring just a bit of joy and light into our lives. A nice surprise for me is coming in the form of a sixth studio album from Douglas Appling or better known as Emancipator. Appling’s new album is the perfect mix of musical storytelling and Downtempo vibes to lift our spirits.
Titled “Mountain of Memory“, this album takes you on a true journey through sound. Showcasing 14 creations that effortlessly flow into one another, you’re left with no choice but to listen from start to finish. Guaranteed by the end you wind up cleverly sucked into the intricate emotions of which Appling’s mind provides a romanticized mental state of bliss.
The staple instruments you expect from Emancipator like guitars, violin, and orchestral strings are all showing up. From the sheer use and range of subtle vocals and operatics, this is nothing short of astonishing. But then, you hear the intriguing Persian dilruba, cimbaloms, Latin, African hand drumming, and baroque flutes. The more you listen the more you start to hear the unconventional but beautiful use of finger snaps, bubbling water, and music boxes. It’s intoxicating. The vocals are so expertly intertwined in the music you sometimes can’t tell if it is someone singing or if it is an instrument. The end result is ethereal.
Emancipator has put together something magical with this album. It is somehow the perfect soundtrack to go on a gorgeous hike outdoors or to keep you motivated while cleaning your apartment. I can only imagine how these sounds would be during a sunrise set at a festival. I hope this soothes your ears and calms your heart. Stay safe and remember to wash your fucking hands.
Weeping strings, playful pan flutes, boom-bap drum beats and raindrop synths. That’s how Emancipator’s Douglas Appling casts aural spells…This is the soundtrack to a fairy tale for an urban generation, and we happily accept the expedition.”
