For this week’s edition of Woman Crush Wednesday we have chosen the very talented Amber Giles, more commonly known as Mija. The 27 year old DJ, producer, singer, songwriter is originally from Phoenix, Arizona. When she was 17 years old she was apart of a choir that toured France and Canada. Unfortunately she had to drop out for financial reasons. Not long after that she moved into a house of DJ’s which allowed her a solid chance to work on her music.
Not only was she progressing her musical talents, she was promoting for a local hot spot. Mija even booked Skrillex for a spot at her club during his up and coming phase in his career. That moment would later help her own career progression. Before we get into that, it’s important to know she has truly worked her ass off. She began working semi-weekly at a hotel performing This allowed her an opportunity to incorporate Jazz and Latin into her sets. People listening to her took very well to what she was putting out, and by the end of her first gig she had two more booked. Now back to how Skrillex helped her out. In 2014 when he was playing at Bonnaroo, he remembered Mija from Phoenix and brought her onto stage with him. Later that year she won the Black Butter Records mixing competition which provided her the opportunity to play at TomorrowWorld in Atlanta, Georgia.
In August she played at Taos Vortex and at Kremwerk in Seattle, Washington. Back in May she graced the stage at EDC Japan. More recently, Mija took the stage at Academy LA for their Sunday Summer event, DayTrip alongside Doc Martin and Option4. Luckily for myself and Editor at Large Alex Lamb, we have the opportunity to check her out at Dirtybird Campout this weekend. For those unaware, the adult summer camp runs from October 4th to October 6th in Modesto, California. Stayed tuned for a recap of her set and more reasons why she is a total badass!
