Orbital | On and On and On at Movement #TBT

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Halcyon + On + On was on a guilty pleasure movie… no not Hackers guys (although that was a great film)… Mortal Kombat. To be fair, both movies hit the scene in 1995, and Orbital was enjoying their ride of popularity with the cult-like following of the track. I fell in love with the it, and purchased the Mortal Kombat soundtrack… literally to just have that one song. (I would have recorded it on a cassette tape off the radio, but it didn’t get a lot of air-play at that time). So you see, this week’s Throwback Thursday is a true #TBT. When Orbital was announced for Movement, my friend Danielle purchased her ticket all the way from Colorado. That’s the type of true fandom they inspire. For those who know, they know.

Paul and Phil Hartnoll will be making their debut at Detroit’s legendary Movement festival on May 25th with a LIVE closing set. Did you hear me, all you Disclosure fans… I know this is a hard choice but there is no real choice. If you aren’t at Orbital I am secretly judging you, and harshly, in my all-black outfit, NOT clacking my fan.

“When we play live, the songs have developed and changed over the years,” says Paul Hartnoll in a recent interview. “They’re similar to how they were obviously but there’s nice little changes and additions.”

In all seriousness, no matter your choice, I highly suggest you check out these two amazing pioneers of electronic music. They so rarely tour the United States, and I honestly NEVER thought I would ever have a chance to see them. When they broke up… there may have been tears. (Black techno tears OK). When they announced they were reuniting, I was stoked, and I have to give HUGE props to Movement for landing one of the most prolific acts of all time for 2019.

Leading up to their inaugural Movement performance, the duo recorded a double mix set for MixMag’s vaunted In Session series featuring artists from this year’s lineup. “We are very excited to be part of the well respected Movement Detroit this year and thought it would be fun to put together a couple of one-hour mixes preceding the festival,” the Hartnoll brothers state. “Orbital have played live in Detroit many times over the years but that has always been our own shows. It’s going to be very different this year being part of Movement Detroit which we are really looking forward to performing at,” they add.

At the festival, the duo will be performing hits from their extensive catalog including classics like “Chime,” “Halcyon On and On,” and “Belfast” as well as more recent singles like “P.H.U.K.” from their latest album Monsters Exist. I guarantee I am going to happy cry when they play Halcyon + On + On. Sometimes, we just know ourselves well.
