JVNA is revisiting the sound that first defined her as an artist with Violet Genesis, a five-track EP that brings her back to the melodic bass, cinematic sound design, and ethereal atmosphere that launched her musical project. Out now, the release reflects both her earliest influences and the growth she has experienced through years of exploring different sides of her artistry.
Inspired by anime soundtracks and Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) scores, Violet Genesis combines expansive melodies, immersive production, and emotionally driven songwriting. The EP draws on the hopeful, nostalgic qualities of JVNA’s original sound while incorporating more refined production techniques, stronger songwriting, and a more mature vocal approach.
The project explores themes of love, perseverance, and overcoming hardship, using the widescreen scope of cinematic game music to frame deeply personal emotions. September’s single ‘Gravity’ introduced the direction of the EP, telling the story of standing beside someone whose world is falling apart and trying to guide them back toward hope. The track captures the balance between vulnerability and resilience that runs throughout Violet Genesis.
For JVNA, the release represents more than a return to familiar musical territory. After spending several years experimenting with different styles and creative identities, she has returned to the sound that feels most authentic to her, now equipped with the experience to develop it with greater intention.
“This EP is me going back to where it all started. When it was still just for the love of it, before all the different eras. There was a sound that was just purely me – hopeful, ethereal, nostalgic. Heavy sound design, melodic bass, cinematic, anime OST and video game score inspired. That’s where JVNA began, and that’s where this album lives,” she explained.
She continued by reflecting on how each stage of her career helped shape the project. “Over the years I’ve explored so many different sides of myself as an artist and I genuinely loved all of it. Every era taught me something, every experiment made me grow. And now I’m at this place where I wanted to pay homage to my original sound but with everything I’ve gained since then. Better songwriting, more mature vocals, stronger production, and a level of intention I didn’t have before.”
That personal connection extends to the way the EP was created. As with her previous work, JVNA wrote, produced, performed the vocals, and released Violet Genesis independently. The result reflects a hands-on creative process in which the music’s sound, emotional direction, and storytelling remain closely connected to her own experiences.
“It’s cinematic, JRPG video game score inspired, with themes about overcoming hardships and love, and a retelling of everything that made me fall in love with music when I first began this project,” she said. “At its core this album is deeply nostalgic – not in a looking-backward way, but in a this-is-who-I-am way. It’s me honoring where I started from while showing everything I’ve become.”
Born in Los Angeles to Taiwanese parents, JVNA began studying classical piano at six years old, laying the groundwork for a career that would eventually merge electronic music, pop, and cinematic composition. Her studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music expanded her understanding of film and game scoring, helping her combine technical precision with the imaginative worlds that continue to influence her music.
Anime, gaming, and electronic music became central to her creative identity, while her early remixes attracted a growing online audience. She also built a community through Twitch, where fans helped crowdfund her debut music video, ‘I’m With You,’ with just $1,000. The self-directed tribute to her late father became an important early milestone in her development as an independent artist.
Her debut album, Hope In Chaos, arrived in 2021 and explored loss, resilience, and the process of moving forward. The release was followed by a successful North American tour, further expanding her connection with listeners. In 2023, she released Play With You, embracing a darker, more assertive direction centered on feminine empowerment and reclaiming personal strength.
With Violet Genesis, JVNA brings those experiences back to the foundation of her sound. Rather than simply recreating the music that introduced her to listeners, she revisits its defining elements with the perspective and skills she has developed since then. The EP connects her earliest inspirations with her present-day creative identity, reaffirming the cinematic, emotionally charged approach that has remained at the heart of her work.
