Luna Shadows Embraces Early-2000s Nostalgia On New Single “gutspill”

Luna Shadows is ready to let it all out. On her new single “gutspill,” the Los Angeles-based artist channels unfiltered emotion through crunchy, Midwest emo-inspired guitars, dreamy electronic production, and the layered vocals that have become a defining part of her sound.

Co-written and co-produced with Chris Freeman of Hot Mulligan, “gutspill” takes a playful swing at modern nostalgia, drawing from the emotional immediacy and pop-punk energy of early-2000s alternative music while filtering those influences through Shadows’ distinctly atmospheric production. The result marks the beginning of a lighter, more emotive chapter for the singer-songwriter.

“‘gutspill’ is a song about when you fear your feelings are about to fall out like confetti,” Shadows explains. “You can try to hold them in or push them down, but ultimately, it’s more fun to let them out. Do it just for the plot. It’s a crush you can’t confess, an overwhelming emotion you can’t shake. It’s an ode to saying what you mean, even if you have to turn it into poetry and put it in a song.”

The accompanying music video continues that playful departure from Shadows’ typically more serious visual style. Featuring Freeman on guitar, the clip embraces the pop-punk aesthetics of the early 2000s while serving as Shadows’ first traditional band-style performance video. She directed, produced, production designed, and edited the visual herself, further reinforcing the hands-on creative approach that has defined her career.

Luna Shadows writes and produces from her bedroom in Los Angeles, building an ethereal sonic world from the ground up. A classically trained pianist, she began writing songs at eight years old before attending LaGuardia High School as a vocal major and eventually relocating to California.

Over the past decade, Shadows has carved out a distinct space within alternative pop, steadily evolving her sound while maintaining complete creative control over the worlds surrounding her music. Her catalog has accumulated more than 60 million streams, while her work has earned coverage from Billboard, NYLON, W Magazine, PAPER, Wonderland Magazine, and LADYGUNN.

Beyond her solo career, Shadows has also worked as a songwriter, producer, and engineer for other artists, while expanding her creative reach into video games through composing and production.

With “gutspill,” Luna Shadows brings her lifelong connection to alternative music directly into the spotlight. By combining nostalgic guitars and pop-punk energy with her signature electronic textures, she embraces a brighter and more playful side of her artistry without sacrificing the emotional depth that has made her music resonate.
